Plus, I'm 19 and feel like I must've fucked up my teeth to need a root canal at my age. I also have more than a handful of cavities, despite brushing and flossing daily (although admittedly this is something I began a few years ago and not something I've done forever). How do you guys keep your teeth healthy?
The thing that will ruin your teeth more than anything is drinking regular soda. I went from no cavities drinking diet, to 8 cavities drinking regular. That was over the course of one year.
Also, some people just genetically have shitty teeth.
I got a root canal when I was 18. The procedure didn't hurt at all, it actually got rid of the hypersensitivity completely for almost 2 years. But lately the sensitivity has returned, although not nearly as much as before the root canal, and apparently that's normal.
From Wikipedia:
" Advice for Patients Requiring Root Canal Treatment
If a tooth requires root canal treatment it is unlikely that any other form of therapy (other than extraction of the tooth) will be successful in the long term.
In the short term, for controlling pain and discomfort, many over the counter NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen can be used.
In certain cases (if prescribed by the dentist) antibiotic therapy may be of benefit to control a severe infection of the tooth.
Despite popular belief to the contrary, modern root canal treatment can be performed quite comfortably. Avoiding or delaying the treatment can reduce the chances of a positive outcome for the infected tooth."

I'm one of those people. Like, some people can brush their teeth once every few days and have fine teeth. I can brush my teeth twice a day and get cavities in every tooth.
I actually had to get 5 root canals last year. Surprisingly, they didn't really hurt. In fact, getting a cavity filled hurts more. I get nitrous oxide when I go to the dentist (along with novocaine) because my teeth suck and because I've had some awful experiences at the dentist so I'm a bit scared when I'm there. Insurance wouldn't cover the nitrous at the root canal place, but even then I was fine and dandy. The last of the root canals hurt like a bitch for some reason, but they gave me painkillers so I was good.
It did get rid of sensitivity in my teeth, which is a good thing.
