    You need a matched pair of RAM to properly dual channel.

    You don't always need a matched pair but it definitely helps, plus it has to be at least 3200/400mHz RAM (think I have the numbers right). As to what slots they need to go in, you'll want to check out your motherboard's manual for that, usually they're coloured the same or something similar but every manufacture likes to do things a little different. You won't hurt anything if it can't dual channel, you might get an unstable system or not able to boot up, but it should tell you on the POST screen what speed it's working at.

    you will need to turn a setting on in your bios, most likely. It may have an automatic setting, but you should still set it yourself.
