Older Game. Released in 2001, buts till very fun to play. Not your typical first person shooter / "war simulator".
Running and gunning gets you killed. Need to infiltrate an enemy base and blow up an objective? You're not going to just snipe the guards and blitz in... not if you want to survive at least.
Can drive tanks, and fly Helicopters, and pretty much use any vehicle you encounter in the game to move around the game world as you see fit in order to accomplish your objectives.
However, as you can see, the graphics are a bit dated, but I know I've seen some mods/texture packs posted on here before that appeared to greatly improve the visual quality of the game. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction of said mod/package, while also sparking up some wonderful conversation about your exploits in this otherwise amazingly fun to play game.
I played this a lot when it was new, and reinstalled it a couple times since.
The best part of revisiting it on newer hardware is that it runs smoothly even during huge battles. So you can assemble vast armies in the mission builder and have them converge in the center of an ill-fated town in Everon.
Even play war correspondent by placing yourself as a civilian in the middle of town, or just on the outskirts, trying not to catch a stray bullet or get too close to an exploding vehicle as all hell breaks loose.
Oh, and with a great flight model, detailed terrain and targets that include infantry as well as vehicles, OFP doubles as a surprisingly good helicopter sim. One where you can land next to a convoy you just devastated and admire your handiwork up close, maybe pick off any surviving enemies that lacked the common sense to flee to the treeline.
A Joint Task Force custom mission that my Squad, and a few others participated in. It started at noon in real life, and in game. The sun sets/rises in game at a realistic pace.
The mission was from insertion to extraction. That meant starting at a base, planning our approach and assault, carrying it out, and exfiltrating. We entered via Helos low and fast over the water. Little Birds escorting Blackhawks. We completed our mission that I remember little about, surprisingly.
By the time the mission was over, we had to use Nightvision goggles. Things werent going as planned, but we still had to exfiltrate. A bus of enemy reinforcements was on the way. We hid behind some large rocks, and when the bus came down the road, jumped in front of it, shot the driver in the head, through the glass, then mowed down everyone who came out of the door.
Im pretty sure we placed some explosives on a bridge, and blew it up after we left. But I may have imagined that part.
Capture the Island was the greatest thing ever. Myself and a small group played the hell out of CtI. One session lasting 10 hours. Last hour we rolled on the last enemy position with tank platoons and helicopter squads and leveled the place. Our eyes were burning red, our hands and fingers were aching claws but oooh was it grand. (and pathetic lol)
I remember another instance where we laxed in quickly building our base, fortifications and were quickly overwhelmed by a preemptive strike by the enemy. In a last ditch effort, we secured the construction gear and made a mad dash to get the hell out of dodge with T72s on our ass. Finding a secure and remote location, we rebuilt our forces and returned them the favor. Fantastic, fantastic games.
Simply some of the best gaming to be had IMO.
Also, the FDF (Finnish Defence Force) mod is absolutely fantastic. Anyone who has Flashpoint and have not dled/played FDF is simply missing out on the greatness that is the Ofp mod community. One fantastic thing about the FDF mod is that it contains not only modern and near modern equipment, events but also stuff from WWII (Winter and Continuation War). Skiiing around the countryside as a Finn sniper taking out the russians is simply a blast.
I forget which mission pack it is in (it could even be in the main game), but there is a single mission at night where you are dropped about 2 km north of a bridge that is to be your target. There are a few guards doing almost random patrols, so you can't just blindly sprint toward your goal. Once you get there, you are supposed to paint the bridge with your laser designator and call a bomber. Of course, once the bridge blows, all hell breaks loose. The most awesome thing is that at this point, you can get to the extraction point however you wish. You could slink away and go around the outskirts of the camp, or you could make a break through the camp (which would invariable get you killled). The most fun way, in my opinion, was to head maybe a quarter of a km east, shank the soldier in the guard booth, steal his jeep, and take off to the north. It gets you shot at, but you have a much better chance in a jeep than on foot.
Also, making custom missions where all you do is find unique ways to launch vehicles with satchel charges is a lot of fun. I might have some screenshots around here somewhere...
Played this game to death, and I can admit to several all night gaming sessions when I had a network of friends over. Think some of my favorite exploits were assaulting a city filled with enemies via on foot. I also enjoyed piloting an Apache with one of my friends as the gunner, and 2 of my friends in another Apache, taking on an armored column. Playing what we called "Fox and Hounds" was fun with having an area in a map sectioned out and letting 1 person be the hunted in that area, and 3 others hunting him with whatever vehicle/loadout they chose.

Man that ArmA demo left a bad taste in my mouth.
Although the 1.05 patch looks too badass to past up!
Very much still contemplating if I should buy the UK version off gogamer.
