Why Adobe, Why? [PDF readers]

Ok, I'm not even sure anymore if I'm posting here to whine, ask for help, or if I just want to be around others who share my misery, but Adobe has managed to push me over the edge.
Sure, I didn't like the sieve that is Flash, but at least it has the excuse of being designed as a plug-in for netscape navigator in a time where these things where not well understood and it's mostly a dying technology anyway.

But I'm mostly here to bitch about Adobe acrobat, and mostly for a frivolous reason at that.
Adobe Acrobat is using 1.24gb of SSD HD space, and that's not even counting the amount of space the program is actually taking up.

Yes, in their infinite wisdom, they've decided to put every installer for both x86 and ARM processors in my /programdata directory, you know, in case I move this HD onto an ARM computer and want to re-install version 8 through 10 of Acrobat (9.63 is especially useful to keep around!). This'll save me the inconvenience of re downloading it from their website (where it's a 10mb download or so).

It's not even that I'm opposed to programs using space, I mean, that's what it's there for, but this? Who thought this could ever be a good idea?

In closing, I guess I'm looking for a new PDF reader that's of high-quality, and yes, just to piss Adobe off a bit, I'm willing to pay for one.

If you're just looking for a reader, I've been using Sumatra PDF Reader. Not the most attractive UI ever, but it's snappy and I never have the issues I had with Reader.

    I use foxit reader (free).

It works with 99% of the PDFs i run across unless they are doing something really funky with forms.

I use Sumatra. It's lightweight, fast, and I've never seen any rendering errors.

Adobe is a terrible company, and Acrobat/Reader is quite possibly the most bloated, useless piece of technology on the internet.

Going to throw my vote in for Sumatra here. It's free as in beer and speech and does exactly what it's supposed to. I prefer it to Foxit, and I wouldn't ever think of using Adobe's Reader.

What's the differences between Foxit and Sumatra? Besides one being an island in Indonesia on top of being a PDF-reader?

I've used Foxit for a few years now and I don't have any complaints, but if there's an easier/quicker/handier alternative I'm all ears. I'm just looking for a PDF reader that allows me to highlight text and add notes.

And yes, Adobe Reader is terrible, we use it at work for some ungodly reason. :(

*E: still, though, .PDF remains a fantastic file format. Could not do business without it!

Used to use Acrobat. But for some reason, neither Acrobat or Flash will update on this laptop (XP sp3), so now I use Foxit reader. Seems pretty good so far.

Most of this shit is fixable by completely uninstalling it and then downloading the latest version. It is entirely likely that stuff will update properly from then on. For Flash this is recommendable, due to constant security patches that might be exploited otherwise.

    Foxit Reader Get!
Thanks everyone, I'll give this one a shot, and will keep Sumatra in mind in case I'm ever in either the Indian Ocean, or if Foxit Reader doesn't work out.
btw: heads-up for those who've uninstalled Adobe Acrobat: It doesn't remove the mentioned directory /programdata/Adobe/Acrobat, and it can be quite large, so you might want to manually remove it.

Sumatra is super super great as part of a thumbdrive/dropbox kit.

Why? Does it not require installation if you put everything in a dropbox folder?

Nope, I always have the portable version on my USB and it runs, no need to install.

More of a 'hey these are things I need/use on a regular basis and want to be readily accessible.' Ninite has kind of made that obsolete, though.

You could also give Evince a try if you're not offended by the way GTK applications look and behave. Light-weight, does annotations and marking and little else.
