So guys, it turns out that when you make a thread about a game created by a highly public figure, for which there is essentially zero actual information, the discussion inevitably turns to that figure, rather than the game itself.

I don't see why speculation based on a developer's track record is such a sin.
Notch's long-term support for his previous game isn't irrelevant. Especially if he wants to charge people a monthly fee for this one.
I'm sorry, but i lost a Mojang's-Upcoming-Space-Game-Thread. Have you seen one anywhere nearby? It's so hard to see anything in this mangrove forest called What-I-Legitimately-Did-Not-Like-About-Minecraft-Development-Based-On-100%-Impartial-Stuff-And-For-Excellent-Reason-Guv'ner.
Punch trees until the problem is solved.

Now notch will be an actor too, in a Total War Game, lol
Man, this is so unreal , I still don't get it what people see in moving around a bunch of bad cubes...
Those cubes are perfectly fine! Six sides, right angles, all that jazz. What more do you want from a cube?

Concept is neat
But I won't be getting my hopes up until we see some solid indication that they're even remotely capable of delivering on that concept
I'm thinking this game will either be glorious or a completely unplayable mess.

You know, looking at the screenshots and reading the descriptions really make me think of Noctis, which I have totally enjoyed as a Fly-Around-Space-Finding-Neat-Stuff thing. It's not so much a game as a procedurally generated space exploration toy-thing.
Looks like Notch is taking another cool concept and running with it, and I completely approve of this process.

It's not generic army manshoot #14 and I haven't seen Notch use the words 'emotionally engaging', so I'm all for this.

I'm also going to throw my vote in the "terribad name is terribad" camp. I also think that notches past history is absolutly relevant here. I'm not a programer so I'm not going to talk about his ability at writing code, I've never met the man so I'm not going to make judgements about his charicter.
However facts are facts and I'm very skeptical about this game for various reasons. Firstly so far it sounds too technical for a layman like me to pick up, the name really reinforces this view. Secondly, the best things in minecraft are in mods made by third parties. The vanilla game itself is buggy, basic and mundane. Notch has pulled a bit of a Peter Molenux by promising the heavens and failing to deliver, and even if they do manage to make something half as good as tekkit out of the original game now, who cares? It's two years later, the vast majority of people have moved on. I really have little sympathy for the argument that he focused on mod support rather than finishing the main product, if you're going to be a dev, make your own damn games! Don't make a bare bones sandbox and expect the community to flesh it out for free while you rake in the cash.
I get the sense that Notch is an ideas man. Problem is there's nothing special about that, every person on these boards probably has a few shithot ideas for a game. He needs to sit down, properly work out what he can and can't do, what his cutomers want and whether he has the attention span to see this one to fruition. Either way I won't rule this out yet but I already know I won't be an early adopter.

The vast majority of people don't seem to have moved on from Minecraft, they seem to have just discovered it. An average of around 10,000 people buy the game every single day for weeks if not months now and the community is huge and doesn't seem to be slowing down one bit. And Notch delivered on the majority of things he promised. I've been playing Minecraft since it was a free, basic, browser-based game with a tiny, tiny selection of blocks to choose from and no survival mode at all and I can tell you that it has come a loooooooooooooong way since I paid for the game.
And Notch IS an ideas man but he also likes to sit down and immediately start creating whatever his idea is. Some people may not like his wild approach to game making, with little forethought or planning but he still is able to take his idea and run with it and make a good game. Check out the stuff he's made for the Ludum Dare contest. Those games are made in 48 hours and are surprisingly well-done, and he does that kind of thing for fun.
I probably won't be an early adopter either (mostly because this doesn't really sound like my cup of tea) but I'll be keeping an eye on it and I think Notch can deliver something fun with some cool ideas.

Notch is an ideas man who is actually willing to put in the work to turn his ideas into reality. That's the difference.

Not so. He actually fell asleep one night, but left his computer on and his cat in the room. The next morning? Minecraft. With the money that a few people gave him for that product, he was able to hire the rest of Mojang and get them to write all the code. He literally just sits there spouting ideas and letting others do the work for him. If this thread's to be believed, anyway.
The concept of an actual, working ship's computer that you can code for and run your own software on, and protect against attacks and stuff? That sounds brilliant to me. All aboad that thing.
Noctis is the one you can walk around your ship in right? Because that was awesome and I believe you sent Me the link to it Drake, thanks.
And this is, at the very least, an interesting concept.
Yeah, that's the one, and there's a universe of billions of stars and planets, all of which you can land on.
Noctis is indeed wonderful, a universe in 5 megs.
Yeah, that's the one. It's a great toy, not much of a game. I love that sort of thing though. I'm happy to just zoom around space, finding planets and moons to mess around on. I can do that sort of thing for hours. So if 0x10^c is an elaboration on this basic concept, where he expands it and adds some game systems I'm all about it. If this Metaverse sub is low enough I'll even get on that too, even though I usually don't like the idea of a sub (I understand why they can be necessary).
And yeah Isy, I'm the guy who linked you to Noctis. Since I've been talking about it I'll go ahead and link it here. A bit of warning though, you'll need to use a VM or DOSbox (or a bootdisk if you are a masochist) to run the thing, and if I'm remembering correctly it took me a fair bit of tweaking on the DOSbox side to get Noctis running.

No doubt. Hyperbole aside I don't think Notch magically pulled minecraft out of his arse. No doubt it took blood, sweat and tears to get it as far as he has, I have a lot of respect for anyone who actually manages to make it as a developer. I'm just saying that a lot of the work done by the minecraft modding community puts the base game to shame. It really does feel like a product that he was passionate about, but got bored of and shelved it without putting in everything he intended to. The updates just started getting slower and slower with less and less in them. Now this happens a lot with games and it's generally something we have to accept when a dev decides a game is no longer worth the time and effort, but the funding model minecraft used, "buy now to fund the early development and get major updates for free later", means dropping it like this is shitty for the early adopters.
But hey, it could have been worse. He could have been like Zachary Barth and abandoned the project after a month.
Can you please tell me the tale behind this? I only know Zach as the creator of SpaceChem.

Wiki says he was the original creator behind infiniminer, the game that inspired Notch to make Minecraft. Apparently hackers stole his source code and it was causing problems, so he moved on.

It really is weird using Minecraft as a baseline for how the development for this game will play out. Notch and Mojang are in completely different situations for these things. Minecraft sorta ballooned out of control while he was going through the motions of creating a company for the first time. It will always be awkward and undeveloped because it was not made with any specific design in mind. Whatever standard they have for it now is different than a good chunk of players have when they played from near the beginning.
This is a planned game. The core features are listed, the scope is set, the resources and timetables are in place(Assuming all those fancy positions and employees know anything, which it's pretty silly not to). Minecraft is a horrible example of what Notch and Mojang can make. This will be one of the first actual legitimate tests, where we see how they preform in a more ideal situation.

Space game, eh?
Joking aside, I am not sure if this game will be for me.
Correct me if I am wrong, but is programming a core part of the gameplay?
Cause I know nothing of programming.
Although I really didn't know anything about 14th century business and that really didn't stop me from playing The Patrician. :P

Agreed, and now I'm intrigued by Noctis.

I still remember stumbling into my first ruins in that game.
Granted, you can't do anything except explore and get more fuel, so it is kinda limited.

Considering how many of them there are, competing for my time, attention and money? Yes.
What the fuck is your avatar from?
