Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.

I remember that he illustrated the Big Green Book, which was one of my all-time favourites as a kid.

He, and his art, will be missed :(

Yeah, they've really stagnated a lot since Is This It.

Sendak was my favorite author as a kid. Sad to hear his time came, but it sounds like he was getting to the age where something can happen and then you're gone. I'm glad he lived such a long, full life.

Everyone should watch his Colbert interview.

Growing up this was one of my favorite books. I remember sitting on the floor of my grandparents' house, The Little Train That Could, a few books about a town of mice, an encyclopedia set, and this all out in front of me.

Dang. One more bit of my past is 6 feet under.

Kinda sad to hear he was so against e-books but WTWTA would be a pretty crappy read on a tablet I must admit.

I really liked the Night Kitchen book as a kid, but never knew how awesome as a person he was until the Colbert interview.

I never really watched it until the summer one year, back during my high school years living with Dad.

I didn't have any friends during much of that time, so I spent a lot of time watching TV. In the morning, the only thing to watch was Nick Jr so I ended up catching a lot of kids stuff, and Little Bear struck a chord with me.

It was nice to find a cartoon that was really wholesome, and charming. Kind of like Winnie the Pooh.
