Linux Help

First things first: I have an HP laptop running XP Home

I installed Ubuntu yesterday on my external USB hard-drive. No major problems except I get an "error 21" message from GRUB that won't let me boot up when my external is shut off or disconnected.

My question is: is there a way to get my laptop to boot XP when my external is not plugged in??

If not, what's the cleanest way to uninstall Ubuntu (or just GRUB really)?

You could repartition your existing drive, giving up about 100M for a linux /boot partition. Grub would install there, and still be accessible when the external drive isn't plugged in.

Easy way to do this would be to re-install Linux. If you don't want to, I can find some docs on the hard way (moving the partition + data over).

Ok, so say I wanted re-install Ubuntu.

It installs from a live cd so i can boot into the live cd and run the install. I already have two partitions set up on my external for Linux that installer made.

If i made a partition on my main hard disk, how would i get GRUB to install there? When I ran the install, it just told me GRUB would be installed to...i think...HD 0,0...or something.

The partitions the installer automatically makes are for a "/" and a "swap" on my external but it also wanted to make a "/media" partition on my main drive that i told it not to.

If you tell it to create a /boot partition, and point it towards the main drive's small parition, it should just do the right thing.
