Harddrive Got Screwy, Now No Internet

So my harddrive was freezing up and crapping out I believe due to a hard linked file to another harddrive that I made. I've deleted the file and ran chkdsk (which had a metric shit ton of files to correct), and now everything is working fine except I can't get any internet.

My computer connects to the router and says "Internet access" and everything but when I open Chrome/IE it says it has no internet connection and Trillian and Steam won't work either. When I open Chrome it says "Your profile could not be opened correctly. Some features may be unavailable. Please check that the profile exists and you have permission to read and write its contents" and when I do the diagnostic thing on IE is says "Windows could not automatically determine this network's proxy settings".

The router/network is working just fine, as I am using my laptop connected to the router to make this post.

Anyone have an idea of what to do?

EDIT: When I try to ping www.google.com it says that it can't find the host

but when I ping 74.125.227.97 it works

Try checking your LAN settings and your "Connection" settings. Unless you have some special setup, you either don't need to use a Proxy server, or simply use the System one instead of automatically determining one.

Also, you can try setting up Open DNS (or making sure you don't have any other DNS stuff setup). Not being able to find google except through the explicit IP address sounds like a DNS problem

You could also set your DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, the google public DNS servers and try those.

Yep sounds like a dns problem, try to use the google public DNS, if that works then I would consider running a few AV scans just in case something got on your computer and messed with those settings.

There was a lot of tech supporty type stuff other people tried to help me with, so I'll update you guys:
I tried the 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4 DNS servers and they didn't work, but I could ping them
I tried to flush my dns, and tried the commands to reset my TCP/IP stack (or whatever it's called) and this didn't work either
I tried reinstalling my networking card drivers and I actually couldn't get the installer to work

There is also the really weird thing where Steam says that it's not online, but will show me updates on what my friends are doing, and Trillian says that its disconnected, yet it will receive messages that are sent to me.

Right now I'm fearing that my harddrive might just be FUBAR and requires a reformat.

Based on your description of how many issues chkdsk found, I'd recommend you buy a new harddrive and rebuild on it.

It is very likely some windows files are corrupted.

Have you checked services to make sure dns client is running?

You can try running nslookup in command prompt and put in various website addresses see if you get a response.

    just run command prompt
    type nslookup
    type www.google.com hit enter
see if you get a response
    if no, try www.l.google.com

Aye, I did that, but it didn't find anything wrong.

Why not just express re-install windows as a test.
Install a new copy of windows into the C:\windows.001 folder. See if the clean install fixes the issue when you log into it. If it doesn't you can still go back to your original windows copy and you wont have to restore all your files.
