I've been playing for about 10 hours and beat the world tournament for both singles and doubles once. It's not quite as good as Power Tennis, but pretty much on par with the original N64 game. The game can also get pretty damn tough during the finals of the champions cup. Haven't played much of online yet, but from what I've seen it's pretty barebones and only has regional not worldwide for some reason.

Yeah you can really tell this is the first time the series has touched online, as its online experience is really barebones compared to the likes of the Mario Kart team who've had multiple installments to learn their mistakes from.
You can either make a room to play with ONE friend where you can set rules and whatnot, or you can play randoms, you're given 3 options, either play a tiebreaker game, play a 1 set match, or state you have no preference. Then you're matched against another player. Input lag is a thing, which is probably why there's no worldwide or doubles. Also for some reason you're allowed to pick a star character (For those not in the know: A slightly powered up version of your character unlocked by beating the first set of tournaments as that character) and get matched against someone who didn't.
As for the game overall, if you've played a Mario Tennis game before there isn't anything here that's terribly new, they got rid of Power Shots (Which were stupidly game centralizing in my opinion, I don't weep for their absence, others might feel differently), but Chance Shots, while not entirely game breaking, still will make you rage from time to time.
Purple (flat shot) chance shots are practically an "I win" button unless your opponent can read you/get lucky/you whiff the shot because the big glowing purple circle is bigger than your character's hitbox and you didn't notice until it was too late (I've been there more than I care to admit). It doesn't help that if you press X, the game will automatically decide what kind of shot to use for you, and it will always use the correct shot for Chance Shots. That's not to say that they're unbeatable, they're just really annoying. The red one in particular even has the BS knockback effect most Power Shots had. And once someone gets momentum with Chance Shots, you'll often find that your returns nearly always trigger one while theirs don't (this holds doubly true if you play against a high-level CPU, though it's too early for me to call foul play).
Still a fun game, though.
Edit: I do really appreciate that they gave flat shots their own button instead of making them A + B. Now if only they had used the shoulder buttons for lobs and drop shots instead of A > B and B > A and made X the desperation dive shot instead of a "think for me, CPU!" button. Or at least made the controls customizable, Nintendo and their stubborn control scheme philosophy only Sakurai gets away with breaking...
I got it and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Matches are challenging and winning is really satisfying. Same goes for the special games like the SMB. game. Everything looks and sounds nice and the 3D works very well.

Having trouble with Mario in one of the later tourneys. I'd rather just get better than go buy amazing gear. He's so tough.
I spent several years in University playing 4 player Mario Tennis 64 with friends. It's hard to not sound like a dick but we were insanely good - people would hear about us, think they were the best players in the world and we'd shame them. This game is perfect in my eyes. The gameplay is smooth, quick, and very well balanced. The new coloured circles add an interesting spin (pun intended) on the formula but aren't too gimmicky or overpowered like the silly things in Power Tennis were.
I've played through Singles and Doubles tournaments for my character (Boo), almost done with my Mii and I'm still having a blast. From what I understand there is single-cart multiplayer to help me convince friends to buy it, and I have yet to jump online (mostly out of fear that the netcode will severely disappoint).
All that being said, I think I'm somewhat of a unique customer with regards to Mario Tennis and how much I love it. I could see someone thinking $40 is too much if they think "It's just tennis." Chances are even an RPG mode wouldn't keep them playing - it's all about the gameplay and the experiences I get out of every match. Even the computer matches can get downright epic with insane rallies and saves.
This game is damn good and the circle shots are aptly named as chance shots. You can also use them for mind game potential. Remember, you know what type of shot is coming out of those things and usually where it is going to be, so plan accordingly.

I think a good mindgaming strategy is getting one kind of chance shot and doing something completely different with it. Like get a lob chance shot and then perform a drop shot just as the other guy runs way the hell to the back in anticipation, or vice versa. Or take just about any chance shot while you're near the net and just do a flat shot, who says you need a purple circle to slam the ball at a horizontal angle!

You sound like you have a similar history with Mario Tennis games, and this makes me really want the game, but I know that 90% of my enjoyment for it will be from multiplayer, which will be hard to come by for me as my Mario Tennis friends no longer play video games as often, and so few of my friends have a 3DS. With any luck I will see the opportunity to purchase this in a few years.
Game arrived in the mail today. I've played a tournament and some exhibition matches and I wasn't impressed at first, but as soon as I started playing with the touchscreen things improved dramatically. The game is a ton of fun and I'm looking forward to getting some mileage out of it!
Also, NoA's Facebook page has QR codes for various Yoshi stuff. Yoshi suit for the Mii, and Red and Blue Yoshi characters. Grab 'em!
So I'm loving the game, but the few online matches I had were so laggy. Its like I was standing still. I "compete" online in games much anyway, so it doesn't affect me much. Still an awesome game.

Final Cup tournament can go eat a dick. Every time I serve the floor tiles rotate fully. When the COM serves it rotates between Diddy Kong and the worm hole floor tiles. Might as well just sit there and let them have the set.
Well I decided to try the online since the AI was getting annoying and it is as I feared: the online play is simply unplayable. I have an 11ms ping here and I couldn't even get to the ball from the nasty lag.
Has anyone played a match that actually was playable? I don't want to keep trying for nothing.
Add me - 3DS FC: 0130-2747-6369 will add people from thread that i havent yet when i get home.
Edit: first cup very easy on singles, trying doubles now. Enjoying the gameplay and graphics, hoping for harder difficulty. How do I scan all the qr codes?

And no Koopa Troopa? Come to think of it, what's with Nintendo stripping down their character rosters on games lately? First Mario Kart 7, now this...
Anyway, playing it, and my only other frame of reference is Mario's Power Tennis on the GameCube. I have to kind of agree with the IGN review, though on mine I'm probably going to give it a 4/5. It's not bad, even if it doesn't exactly try to excel.
I just hope that the next Mario Golf does better.
Like Mega Man Legends? Then check out my story, Legends of the Halcyon Era - An Adventure in the World of Mega Man Legends on TMMN and AO3!
Starting to see better difficulty in the matches. Btw, whoever decided to make the stats on the different items you can purchase displayed in pie charts is a fucking moron. I can barely tell which is better than the next.

I just added you.
Edit: Just finished through all the tournaments in singles as my Mii. I don't like the idea of relying on the COM as a doubles partner. I'm going to be yelling at my game a lot aren't I?

I don't know if I'm missing something but it seems that the way they make the AI matches more difficult is by giving the opponent more of those Chance spots for super-shots. Every other shot knocks me back, spins me around, or I have to go lunging after it... and I don't get as many of my own.
Doubles is very annoying since my partner misses the guaranteed points (cross-cut smash shots at the net) a lot.
I have been jumping online and some matches are very playable. It's nice because the computer is completely immune to playing a very smart Tricky character, they always know exactly where the curve shot will go. Players? Not so much.
