I just got a Wii and need help thread

A lot of people are getting a Wii. A few nutters are even camping out for one. I think a thread is needed for helping those who have just gotten one. There are a lot of problems people are having that probably shouldn't have their own thread and there are still questions that people would like answered. Most of these questions probably couldn't go into another thread and would be locked after the question was answered in the second post.

I got a Wii a while ago but haven't done anything with it other than play Twilight Princess. This was mainly because I couldn't afford to buy another game. Because of this, it is only in the last month that I have done much with it. I already had a GC so I didn't have any catching up to do with the GC games. I have a few questions. Is there anyway to have the fan run when the Wii is off but the 24connect or whatever it is called is on? Is it possible to recalibrate the wiimote while playing a game?

Some info.
-The Wii is a funny name.
-Wiis are still hard to find.
-Wiis are still bundled with Wii Sports.
-You will still want to get another game when you but a Wii.
-It is really easy to get use to the Wiimote.

Will I need a GC memory card for the Wii? Yes.

Why can't I do anything with the wiimote in GC games such as pausing it with the home button? When you are playing a GC game, the console is basically just a GC and no longer a Wii.

Are all the peripherals and stuff from the GC work with the Wii? All of them you will probably care about about except for the GB player.

Where should I put the sensor bar? You should put it either at the bottom or top of the TV. I and many others prefer to have the sensor at the top of the TV.

The Wii manual says that I shouldn't use rechargeable batteries in the remote. Will it screw up if I do use them? No, the remote will almost certainly not screw up because of the rechargeable batteries.

There is a blue light on the Wii. What the heck is it for? When Wiiconnect24 receives new information like an email message, the light will turn on.

Can I run homebrew games off of my SD card? No. SD cards are mostly used for just storing saves, pictures, and the like.

Do I need an SD card? You do not need an SD card. The Wii has 256 MB that you can use to save games and virtual console games.

What is this I am hearing about a DVD player? There is a planned Wii that will play DVDs. Thre isn't any information on if it will be widely available. It will most likely be something like the Panasonic Q.

Oh God, Twilight Princess looks horrible! That isn't a question, jackass. Twilight Princess looks horrible because you are playing it on an HDTV. It looks much better if you play it on an old SDTV. Most Wii games don't have this problem so you probably shouldn't worry about it too much if you only have an HDTV.

I keep on having graphical glitches when I use my Wii. What is the problem? If you leave the Wii in standbye mode, some Wiis will overheat, and there will be damage to the CPU. If you have this problem, call Nintendo, and they will replace it.

What is the point of the Forecast Channel? It is cool.

Are there any games that use the Wiimote as more than a gimmick? See the Sonic Wildfire thread.

Do I need to hold the Wiimote in my left hand? You can hold it in any hand. You won't have many problems if you are left handed.

    OMG Megathreadz!

    That being out of the way - what's everyone using for batteries. I picked Panasonic R2s - they retain their charge for ages. Anyone picked up a third party rechargable set?

    The cheap batteries I have been using hold their charge long enough to last me a few weeks so my old recharger is good enough.

    I've never really done the online gaming thing myself for any console ever. And know nothing about 'wifi' so how would that work? I have cable internet and that's it.

    I don't plan on getting a wii any time soon, but knowledge would be nice.

    In case anyone's interested, Nintendo will warranty peripherals. I had a Wii Remote with a broken accelerometer and they sent me a pre-paid shipping sticker to send it in. It's fixed and on its way back now!

    Energizer 2500 mAh, as some of us went on about in "Where we discuss rechargeable batteries"

    Order the Ethernet adapter from Nintendo's online store, or use the NWC USB Connector. That's assuming you don't have a wireless router, but if you do then I can't help you, other than hearing repeatedly "Change the channel to 1 or 11".

    I've sold a few of these, heard nothing but good about them so far.

    http://www.nyko.com/nyko/products/?i=102

    I might get one in the near future since I don't have enough battery operated products in the home to warrant rechargeable AAs yet I like to have the Wii Remote vibration up and the speaker volume at maximum.

    Wii intarweb connections in a nutshell:

    (presumably) Your current setup:

    -->X==>|_|

    where X is your cable modem, --> is a coax cable, ==> is an ethernet cable and |_| is your computer.

    Option 1:

    -->X==>Y <<................>> Z |_|
    ......................................>>[ ]

    Ok now Y is a wireless router it creates a wireless signal out of your internet connection (<<) and Z is a wifi card, connected to your computer, receiving internet (>>). Dots (.......) represent a wifi signal zooming across your house.
    Once this is set up the Wii ([ ]) has wifi built in (no need for another Z) and can read internet (>>) directly.

    Y is roughly $50 and Z is roughly $50. All in all a $100 solution and from now on everything is wireless.

    Option 2:

    -->X==>|_|N << .................>>[ ]

    Where you plug your cable modem (X) into your computer (|_|) via ethernet (==>), then plug in the Nintendo Wifi USB Connector (N). This turns your computer into a wireless router (Y from Option 1) but only for Nintendo products. Now your Wii ([ ]) can have internet.

    N is roughly $50. A $50 solution, but now only Nintendo products are wireless.

    Option 3

    -->X==>R ==>|_|
    _________==>E[ ]

    Where R is a regular router and it's hooked directly to your computer (|_|) and your wii ([ ]) via the Nintendo Ethernet Adapter (E).
    Underscores represent nothing but spacing since this forum software doesn't allow multiple spaces.

    To make things simple, I'm going to lie and say that E is also $50, but I really have no clue. Routers can be found for about $30.
    So that's $80 and now nothing is wireless, but you can hook up 2 more things to your internet connection, and you probably already have a router anyway.

    Uh, hopefully that helped someone. In hindsight I don't think I made anything clearer.

    Another common question on Wifi

    I'm using WPA and WiFi isn't working?
    You're either A) Not putting it in right or B) it's to long

    Personally I had a problem with B because I'm bloody paranoid I guess. I used to use 63 random ASCII characters which was never a problem since I just had the key on a CD and copied and pasted it to my various computers. I'm not sure if the Wii just sucks with long keys or if I just never put it in exactly right. It doesn't help that the Wii doesn't save the key when I try to edit it.

    Anyways moral of the story use a short key and you'll be fine. You should still randomize it though.

    Actually that was surprisingly coherent. So basically what you're saying is, don't worry about hooking it up to the internet as it's a bunch of work.

    It really isn't. The only difficult thing is knowing what to buy. Once you buy it, if you can hook up your Wii, you can hook up these components as well.
