i kiiiiiiiiiinda wanna do fantasy but an issue i have with fantasy is finding a fantasy setting that doesn't give me a case of the hates

i've been playing RPGs for twenty years

i feel like there's nothing new for me in DMing fantasy

I think my main campaign in legend I am going to do a story about how lets say humans and dwarfs want to bring about the industrial revolution pretty much, and the elves and some other race want to use magic to pretty much change the rules of reality so that the industrial revolution couldn't happen so that they can restore the planet to its former natural glory. (no internal combustion, and other things). The humans and dwarfs on the other hand are working on a project that would pretty much fracture the underlying magical currents of the world and thus strip it of most magic.

Both sides don't realize that if either of them actually accomplish their plan they will fuck up the world permanently, but thats for later in the story. I'm going to start the characters off all low level and low time missions and such, and let them work out which side to fight for, and then see if they decide to follow through with it or not.

The challenge will be writing solid NPCS that while technically being bad guys are totally relatable in their logic and goals.

the problem i have with fantasy is i have zero urge to do like

    traditional tolkien-esque fantasy

or even weird twists on that basic premise where the Elves are jungle cannibals and the dwarves have a fascist oligarchy

because in the end they're still elves and dwarves n shit

    BUT

being creative with fantasy requires more work then i am willing to do and requires far more in depth understanding and learning of the setting from the players then i really wanna ask of them

like these things, these Greyhawk tropes n shit, they keep popping up in fantasy not just because the writers are lazy (which they often are) but because they make for easy touchstones for the players to sink into the setting

    and i get that

but lord do i have no interest in dealing with that shit

What are your issues with FATE

I'm not, like, a serious advocate of the system, just wondering

see, i have the opinion that since 99% of all scifi aliens are basically the same things repainted, calling an elf and elf isn't really any different then calling your orcs klingons. Names a name, acts as an entry point so people know what you're doing but then what you do to it afterwards is what makes it interesting.

I seem to be in the minority when i discuss this with people. Names apparently mean a lot more to people then they do me.

Alright, so, I did a video contest for Wizards of the Coast to promote D&D Next (the next iteration of D&D). And now, I'm extremely curious as to what the real changes are. I've read a number of different things. Is anyone in the playtest that can actually enlighten me? I haven't played in over a year and our DM was dead set on 3.5e.

Also, here's the video I made for the contest. Was really just something to grab people's attention: http://www.zooppa.com/ads/dd-next-playtest/videos/dd-next-battle-tactics

SIEGE TV | I made the short film Automata: Prelude. Check out the thread and go watch it here!

The dumb part about pixie charge cheese is that you can use your movement to move -up- and then charge down into them, and just keep doing that over and over again.

I think there's a way to negate the OA if you fly, or something. I'm not really sure, but that's apparently the go-to method of lolcharging now on char-op.

really? don't you have to move at least 2 squares towards the target to charge?

yes but "squares" are actually "cubes" and so you can fly two "squares" up and charge down. The pixie altitude limit only kicks in at the end of their turn. They can double-fly straight up if they want, just they'll fall back to their altitude limit at the end of their turn. So you move action fly straight up, then charge straight back down.

I can get behind this. There's precious little flavor that I won't change to suit the needs. I think power source is probably the biggest thing I have trouble getting past. Want to be a straight up primal caster? Well, you could be a sorcerer or a warlock or a bard and reflavor it, but....eeeeh

that shoudl garner opportunity attacks at the very least.

Or a punch in the player's face.

Yeah it provokes OAs for leaving a square as normal, but if you can get around that you're good to go. It just drastically reduces the need for tactical movement when all you have to do is move up.

and I think Pixies get auto-CA against stuff they're in the same square in (with a feat, anyway) so pixie thief uses a move power to "shift" up, and then charge back down.

So, yeah, punch in the face.
