Talking about Super Retro Games; Was: Trying to figure out the name of an old game.
The game took place way out in space and the goal of the game was to get all of the various pieces together in in order to improve the ship. You had to send out a ship that would go out to get resources and if you were gathering resources too long a giant worm would come. It was a pretty fun game and I'd like to re-buy a copy of it.

Any ideas of the name of the game?
My suggestion would be to give a rough time that the game was out to help anyone who might remember it.
I don't think that's it but we are getting closer. The premise of the game is that you somehow got catapulted into the far realms of space. You needed a set of particular machine parts to put together the engine and win the game. You also have a base that you can upgrade and a fighter/miner that you can upgrade to shoot faster and get resources(which were set up as three different colored crystals).
I even seem to remember it advertised on Penny Arcade a long time ago something with a name like "Outpost"? Had a attractive woman that looked like a mechanic?
NP. The way the game worked was that you went to an area and launched from the ship and shot at rocks. When you shot at some rocks crystal looking things came out that you collected and brought back to the round mother ship. If you were an area too long some sort of worm came out after you.
It was an older game, at least in the early 00's. Maybe even a little before that. Was definitely worth a shot. Thanks for everyone's help.
If you would like to keep playing "name that game" there is another game I'm trying to remember that was a sort of cartoonish zelda like RPG with real time fighting for the PC that was shareware
The premise was that giants invaded the land and you were a prince whose castle was attacked. The goal of the game was to wander around finding a way to defeat the giants. There were a variety of towns where you could upgrade your armor and weapons.
Ok, this one is a lot easier and I remembered it just now but if anyone would like to guess I have more hints. The game came out around 2001 and was put out by a company that primarily does Mac stuff.

Good guesses but the game was the very little known "Pillars of Garendall" created on the Coldstone game engine primarily for the Macintosh but ported into the PC. Because of a disagreement between the developers and the game manufacturer it basically fell into quasi dead ware land. It's actually a somewhat fun game if you like standard somewhat old school RPGs.
I might end up doing this again. Would anyone else like to give it a whirl?

Wait, so this was a quiz and you weren't actually trying to figure out something that you didn't know?

Correct. I couldn't remember the name of that accursed game for the life of me last night. However, with the responses, this might actually be a pretty fun thread.
"Name That Game!"
Now I just need a good "game show host" looking icon.

i've been trying to figure out what this game is for years. okay so it's an old school FPS, like mid to late '90s, that came out on OS9 and i think the first half was distributed as freeware?
anyway you were a tough guy(TM) in some sort of government building, shooting various thugs, and all the levels were inside and everything was marble floors and american flags and water features
i am also suddenly vaguely remembering an outdoor stage with wooden cabins and a hedge maze. it was sorta bloody in the same way marathon was
i will suck ya'lls dick if anyone can remember what this game is. i think i got it on a mac freeware disk when i was a kid
We should also use this thread to talk about old games
Because old games are awesome
Did you guys know that the entire Quest For Glory collection is now available on GoG for $10!?
Good idea. I updated the thread title.
As of late I've been loving on Steam's new Sega Genesis emulation. "Sword of Vermilion" is a good one. "Shining in Darkness" is ok-ish but it gets old super quickly.

me and my best bud have been playing through something called DreamSNES on his dreamcast. workin' on FFV right now but it's got a few other FF games, chrono trigger, all of the fatal furies, and basically every significant game on it
they're all fresh to me since my first system was a psone
we beat final fight 3 last night and it was ridiculous/awesome

I mean I guess the Ur-Quan are essentially giant worms.

That game got so much LAN play back in the day.
It became less fun once we figured out all the imbalances though.
there should be more third person action/base building games

Durr on me.

I suggest either Guy Smiley or Wink Martindale.

Everyone go buy it.
I bought this game.
It's hard.
I've got it down to a science now. I can dominate the galaxy in no time.
Well it's mostly just trying to navigate the dated interface that is hard.
You're a dated interface! MoO2 is perfect! PERFECT!
Civ IV is probably the least arcane but it's still kinda confusing.
My introduction to 4X space games was Sword of the Stars.
I am spoiled.
that's a great game right there
crucial to the development of a lot of boys
