Do you know "Trackmania"? It's basically that, only as an FPS.
    It looks pretty cool/crazy.

I have no idea what trackmania is, but the video looked fun enough. Some sort of user generated laser tag capture and hold....thing?

    Signed up, why not.

Trackmania is fucking good times. If this game has the same kind of community oriented stuff going on with the attendant insane user created levels this game could be insanely good times.

Here's to hoping that Ubi doesn't saddle this thing with retarded DRM.

Trackmania is a racing game where user created tracks are the order of the day. Servers are set up with a rotation of these and the goal is to set the fastest time possible in a given amount of time on the track. A single push of a button will pop you right back to the beginning so it becomes a game of trial and error to shave those few seconds off your times.

So this is a fast paced FPS with the same user created map system.

Oh my. That has a distinct Unreal Tournament, low-grav instagib feel.

This reminds me I haven't played Trackmania in a while. The free version on Steam is pretty excellent.

Ah, that actually looks pretty damn awesome; if I were into racing games more I'd probably have to check it out. I'll take that system for this game though. Sounds good.

Trackmania is literally one of two racing games I actually like (the other being the Mario Kart series)

Hrm, that doesn't look like the Trackmania on Steam. I'm cornfused.

EDIT: Oh, "2". Not out yet, I'm guessing.

2 is out, just not on Steam. But the Steam version has lots more content for it anyway, what with it being out for several years and having tons of player-made stuff available.

This announcement has me playing more Trackmania United these days, and also I looked into what's up with TM 2, Shootmania Storm, and apparently they have plans for a Questmania too. All of these are apparently linked under one "gaming OS" according to Nadeo. This sounds really neat, and I love how totally community oriented Trackmania United is. A shooter and a RPG with this kind of community approach and connectivity sounds fucking amazing to me.

My first impression was "is this it?", but after a few rounds it grew on me. It really does feel like UT instagib + low grav. You can take 3 hits before dying, and the controls could not be simpler. I didn't touch the editors yet, but there's both a Simple and an Advanced editor. It looks like there's only one character available for the beta. They also call them "vehicles" which I think is pretty funny.

There's a clan system as well so we should think about making one.

This shit is now on Steam and it is the bomb. I've been dying for a lean, pure online shooter like this. Download the demo and check out the open beta. This delivers the old school Quake/UT/Tribes adrenaline rush like nothing else has done for me since. Everything is showing such a high level of polish now. All the little touches to enhance situational awareness are great, and the context sensitive weapons I've seen on some maps is a really awesome touch. Enter a bunker and you are shooting a slow shot grenade type weapon. Walk up to a firing position and bingo, out comes the sniper laser.

So yeah, go grab the demo and get in the open beta, go fast and pew pew.

Played literally, like, 5 minutes tonight. Nothing much to report, although first impressions were that it's Quake with no rocket jumping and no guns other than a magical light ball, but I guess some maps have guns according to Drake so maybe I need to play more than 5 minutes. Also can't quite figure out the movement mechanic - what does holding down the jump button do?

  • DrakeDrake Edgelord Trash Below the ecliptic plane.Registered User regular
You get an acceleration effect. Your stamina meter depletes as you hold it down. Try messing around with it, the movement has some cool momentum stuff going on that gives it a bit of Tribes flavor. You get even more juice out of it using it with jump pads and tracks.

I've been playing this a good bit. I've gotten some fun screenshots together and a video. I made all of these from replays of matches using the in-game media editor which is freakin' enormously cool and crazy. Not only can you make sweet media stuff you can also dissect a match from any angle or players perspective.

I can't get it to run well on my work PC unfortunately. I've got TrackMania Stadium beta running smoothly (and looking decent) but this one eludes me. Ah well, someday I'll have a system to run it on!
