Realistically, Wei Shen should have gotten out of Hong Kong yesterday
Shouldn't everyone be gunning for him?
Let's see.
The leader of the Sun On Yee is Broken Nose Jiang, who owes Wei her position and seems to respect the old rules. Wei didn't double cross her, no reason to be angry at him.
Dog Eyes and Big Smile Lee are dead.
Pendrew's probably shanked in prison.
As far as the police in genera; are concerned, Wei Shen is a loose cannon, but not actively a criminal. (Thus Year of the Snake, where he's busted back down to traffic cop.)
88K might hate him, but he's a cop and cops tend to be bad targets, especially when they're easing off already.
Not seeing many relevant enemies.
Of course, the main thing is that Wei Shen is Code Name Serpent, the god of unpaid debts, and the deadliest man in Hong Kong.
When he was tortured half to death he broke out and murdered a small army, then he survived a point blank shotgun blast and an explosion big enough to put The Boss in a coma, and he finished it off by beating Big Smile Lee to death and shoving him in a woodchipper. He was still in shape to be debriefed.
The question isn't why Wei Shen stayed in Hong Kong. The question is why anyone else did.
Original pitch for the game starred a female assassin in the Hong Kong underworld. Our man Shen came in as a result of Activision's meddling.
I want her in the protagonist spot.
I also want Wei Shen back. In the protagonist spot.
Game already was ripping off the good bits of GTA. I want the best bit of five stolen. Wei Shen can't work for the triads anymore, since his cover's blown. So, someone new can do that, while Wei is a loose cannon supercop on the edge. Play both sides of the law in pursuit of justice. See the God of Unpaid Debts as the rest of the world sees him (IE, terrifying).
It'd be great fun.
A cancelled project from Psygnosis had the vibe from the first sentence. Female lady on a jet ski in what appeared to be China.

Honestly, considering how bizarrely run Square Enix is right now in terms of reasonable sales projections, I don't know if they'll let them make another Sleeping Dogs.

Wei Shen will be a Summon in Final Fantasy 15. He'll run by and stab an enemy with a frozen swordfish multiple times.

But man I really like the "HOLY SHIT" system in this game, where if you break a guy's knees or throw someone off the building all of his friends go "HOLY SHIT ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS"
Yeah, I always loved the way that sickening crunch makes mooks wince.
Always thought the Arkham games needed something like that.
Anyway, I'd love to see Sleeping Dogs 2: Big Trouble in Bigger Hong Kong to add some improved gunplay. Shit, just cannibalize Stranglehold's mechanics.

Despite some of the references and assumptions I made in writing the OP for this thread in the runup to the game's release, Sleeping Dogs is really not that John Woo-like. There's hardly any gunplay comparatively, with guns basically as a temporary powerup. Strangehold was obviously all about the gunplay, and a very different game. And wasn't it also...kinda crappy? I don't know, I never played it.

I felt really sorry for the students when I was practicing those moves after first learning them. It's one thing to be yelled at by the sifu, but then some new guys winds up somehow breaking your knees more times than you have knees.

Nah, wasn't bad and it could have been a lot worse.
I mean you're playing Chow-yun Fat as Taquilla in a John Woo movie.
It was like a less angsty, more actiony (because of the stunts) Max Payne.
I'd give it a solid 7

I am entranced.
The driving is pretty weak though.

Master the ram. The Ram is mother. The Ram is father. The RAM... IS CIVILIZATION.
Oh I love the car "super powers".
I just meant the driving physics. They're incredibly simple. You've got this deep and interesting combat system, a fairly interesting shooting system, a fantastic parkouring system, some really neat things you can do with the cars, all set up so that they reward the development of skill...and then you've got the actual driving part of the cars, where I can only imagine the designer fell asleep from the sheer exhaustion of making everything else so awesome, and then they just implemented his rough draft.
It's perfectly functional and not the least bit exciting or interesting. Once you've gotten used to it, there's nothing to learn, nothing to master. Considering how deep all the other systems are the driving-for-dummies sticks out like a sore thumb.

The great parts of driving are the things you have to do in missions such as action hijacks and the way time slows down momentarily when you aim a gun to set up a more dramatic shot. Driving is a tool to get to do other awesome stuff, not an awesome thing in and of itself. Unless you're using your car to run over enemies.
I mostly used cabs outside of missions after a while unless I was after a specific collectible.
You're telling me that leaping from one car to the next is NOT exciting?
Man, your commute to work must be AWESOME.
I already mentioned that the car super powers are great. I am talking specifically about the going from a to b. The car physics. Acceleration, inertia, momentum, drifting, corners, handbrake, braking, wet roads, car damage modelling, and so on. They're all extremely arcadey and simple.
Please ignore 1). Ramming and 2). Action Hijack.
They are irrelevant. They are not driving. They are (awesome) stunts. Situational stunts.

Oh man this games combat is so good.
I was beating up a trio of thugs near a lockbox, and there was this concrete waist high car barrier nearby which the last thug was behind. He was swinging punches from behind it and i couldn't hit him or counter him. After I'd done with all the others I thought "Right you, I'll jump over this barrier and give you a proper seeing to, see if I dont!"
Wei did a vaulting flying kick to his face. In slow motion.

Yeah, I tended to drive around in super cars because there's simply no risk in losing them. Oh, you crashed and it's wrecked? Go to a garage and order another one up, in any color you want, free of charge after the initial purchase.
I was so disappointed that GTA V didn't simply steal that entire system. Instead, you still had to go to Pay & Sprays for repaints, and the characters each had just one garage for them on the map, generally distant from their normal safe house (Michael's was close, but the others not so much).
Also, it's against the rules to make Wei wear a shirt, right? Because I could never get myself to do it.
One of the best things is accidentally finding out Wei Shen has a wall run roundhouse kick.
Even better when you knock a guy out with it at the same time.
I was all "What did I just do? Was that what I think it was?"
Then I spent the next five minutes doing it on everyone. I even grabbed people and dragged them over to the walls.
Also if you are in face time it seems that you can just toss low level enemies over balconies. I found this out and then proceeded to chuck four guys over the railing in a row.
I also love that things like the kick he does after a stun aren't tied to the combo knee stun like the training and info text lead you to believe, but also can be done after the leg break (and probably the arm break, but I don't have that yet). Basically any stun.
Or being able to tackle melee guys to disarm them! That's awesome. Then you grab their weapon off the ground and take out the grappler right at the start.
Or that dragging a guy through a group of guys knocks everyone out of your way. Or that you can throw people while dragging them, knocking down others.
So much dirty evil awesome crap you can pull.
I found out that you can farm the fight clubs for face, and spent about an hour testing to see if it ever drops off or stops working. It doesn't.
It's not much, but it's infinite.
You just have to beat up a loooooooot of people.
I have a valet!

My biggest complaint is that sleeping dogs could have done with slightly more visceral environmental finishes like the yakuza series. Some of the animations are phoned in and dont carry enough weight. Otherwise is my favorite sandbox game

The Punisher game had the most amazing and violent environmental take downs I've seen. I modded my oXbox just to be able to play that game uncut.

My favourite environment finishers besides the usual swordfish/meat hook/engine block/fish tank ones is the one where Wei kicks an enemy into a smaller phone booth and beans him with the phone itself

His kung fu teacher isn't yelling at him.
He's yelling at everyone else.
WHILE Wei breaks every bone in their bodies.
Then again, considering Wei doesn't kill anyone in a training accident, I guess the methods work.
