There is a machine that is often used to measure people's positive/negative reactions to things as they are watching them. The way it works is that you give someone a dial, which typically has a spectrum from something like "Strongly Positive" to "Strongly Negative". As the respondent is watching something - say, a movie - he moves the dial up and down depending upon how he feels about what is being presented to him. Typically, this machine it is used for media such as movies and television shows. I also recall that it was mentioned in an episode of the West Wing to gauge reactions to different delivery styles of a speech (and hence determine the best way to deliver said speech).

For the life of me I can't remember what this machine is called, and my Google-fu is failing me. In an act of desperation, I have come to you, my PA forumers, for the answer to this question. If you know the name of this...thing...I will adore you with the passion of a thousand love gods as recompense.

I believe you're thinking of a perception analyzer.

Err. Perhaps you're already aware of this, but these devices produce incredibly unreliable results even at the best of times, just FYI. The modern standard for gauging audience perception is to use people meters, which track what a person watches and for how long, over a long period of time with a large sample population.
