Pete and Pete, dudes

so if you were a young man with an older brother in the '90s, it's extremely likely you were hella into Pete & Pete, the raddest kid's show ever. it was smart and well-written and well layered and it still retains it's quality now that i'm in my twenties

so who are the petes?
olderpete.jpg[img][/img]
Older Pete narrates each story, giving us essential background information. This Pete is fairly average and normal. Pete's best friend is Ellen Hickle.

Older Pete is played by Mike Maronna.

youngerpete.jpg
Younger Pete's view on life is rather bitter, and he has a twisted disposition. But he still has his charm. Pete's personal super-hero is Artie, the Strongest Man in the World.

Younger Pete is played by Danny Tamberelli.

mom.jpg
om's name is Joyce, although there's rarely cause to call her anything but "Mom". Mom does not seem to have a job except keeping her odd family in line.

Mom is played by Judy Grafe.

plate.jpg
Since mom's plate has its own listing in the opening credits, we do the same here. Mom had an accident as a child which meant a metal plate had to be put in her head. In fact, this is how Mom and Dad met each other: Dad was using his metal detector at the beach and detected the plate. The rest is history. Mom's plate can serve as a radio antenna (which has its pros and cons) and as a lightning rod (which also has its pros and cons).

dad.jpg
Dad is just simply Dad. He's a bit of a bumbling fool, but his heart is in the right place. He owns and operates a driving range. Dad's name is Don Wrigley.

Dad is played by Hardy Rawls.

artie1.jpg
Suffice it to say here: Artie is the strongest man in the world.

petunia.jpg
Petunia is younger Pete's tatoo on his arm.

pete and pete is the absolute bomb digitty guys. it totally encapsulates a sense of childhood mystery without being trite

It took me a long time as a kid to figure out this show was set in Canada. Then for a long time I just assumed it was an accurate picture of what life in Canada was like.

someone once told me that pete and pete was the best Unknown Armies campaign ever written and i was like damn you're right

Unknown Armies is a game about how urban legends are real rituals iwth actual power and how living in certain ways, and really believing in it, can give you special powers

and shit like King Of The Road and crossing time zones when DST starts play into that nicely

oh man, i remember that king of the road episode

every time my family would drive a long distance, my brothers and i would stick our arms out of the windows in an effort to make our family's van fly

I looooved the marching band episode, day of the dot

This show also had the best guest stars

And the music holds up surprisingly well. I still pop in the Polaris record that is basically the soundtrack to the show from time to time and just get a big grin on my face

the hygiene episode was great too

or the one where young pete and his friends tried to protest bedtime by staying awake for a record amount of time

all i remember about that episode is the one girl who would stare at the sun, which would make her sneeze, which kept her awake longer

Apparently that particular cocktail started out at a New York cocktail bar I forgot the name of, but cocktails made with smoky single malt whisky are becoming popular and are the new thing in the world of mixing drinks or so says the Japanese man currently rated as the greatest mixer of drinks. I considered it a god damn sin when I read about it, but trying it made me a believer. I mean, it's not as good as just drinking the whisky, but it was damn fine. Probably my new favourite cocktail even.

    Fuck off and die.

I'm not entirely sure, but chartreuse and lime juice were prominent. It's a variation of a cocktail called "Last Word" apparently.
