Hi guys,

this is a bit of an obscure request. I really like the musical effect of string melodies combined with electric guitar.

For a good example, try this link - http://music.jwmusic.org/track/anomaly-feat-rachel-denlinger-and-rich-brilli
its a track from the recent Indie Game Bundle, the Gungirl soundtrack.
Hopefully it plays- I'm on a terminal PC without flash, so it might not play.

Anyone got any good recommendations for similar styles?

You'll want to look at some post-rock stuff. Obvious candidates are Sigur Ros (though often they're strings or electric guitars), and I'm pretty sure Mono uses a lot of strings in their songs. The genre doesn't often lend itself to the shorter, driving melodies and power chords you're probably looking for, though, and you probably don't want to sit through 10 minutes to get to the parts with the strings.

Here's a random collaboration between Jim Guthrie and Owen Pallett. They've done some work together and since Pallett does string work for a lot of artists and bands he's a good place to look (along with Andrew Bird, who works with more American artists).

    Jim Guthrie - 1901
Jim Guthrie - Now, More Than Ever

    Does bass + strings count?

You might also check out the first, and maybe second? Islands album, when they had those twins front and centre playing violins on every track. They're often buried in the mix (if you'd seen them live, though), but at least Return to the Sea might be worth a look.

    Islands - Abominable Snowman

Arcade Fire also has some string players on hand, along with Owen Pallett in the studio. Check them out.

Maybe some bits of random songs, like the end of The Hold Steady's First Night

Here's David Gilmour (guitarist and vocalist from Pink Floyd) playing some of his 2006 solo album live with an orchestra. The guitar starts a minute or two in:
