My dad is turning 60 next week, and so he and I are going to take a road trip. Our HQ is Charlotte, NC- so- assuming its 3 days- does anyone have any advise on what we should hit? Assuming we're looking at 3 maybe 4 days. Any other tips for something like this? I'm pretty excited- we've never done something like this- just the two of us. Thanks for your help!
If it is sight seeing you want, I really like the blue ridge/ AT/ western NC area. Grandfather mountain is cool, linville gorge etc. No clue if you two are up for hiking or not. But honestly, the parkway is a great drive if you just want some pretty sights and to talk. If you are looking more for cities, well I have a big soft spot for the chapel hill area. Tons of good bars/restaurants/music venues. For the latter try and catch a show at either Cat's Cradle or Local 506. For the former hit Milltown for great beer/whiskey and good grub, or Lantern if you are feeling like dropping some dollars on an amazing meal. Oh, and the best BBQ in the state is at Allen and Sons, sit in Tammy's section, get an extra large plate and either sweet tea or a lemonade if you are ok with reeally sour lemonade. Finish the meal with some sort of pie.
Now, in the beginning of June, there's a bunch of fireflies around there that blink in synchronization. You'll have to hike back a little bit, and make sure you bring a red tint for your flashlight because they won't light up under a white light. It's really cool if you're into nature and or pretty light shows.
Also, if you like touristy stuff, there's more of that around the Gatlinburg area.
Google maps gives a drive time for Charlotte to Gatlinburg at about 3.75 hours.
You could hit up Asheville and the mountains in that area, cute town with easy access to some hiking stuff. Its about a 6 hour shot to the outerbanks from Charlotte, which is a great beach if you've never been, But finding a place to stay short notice may be hard. The drive through the state is also kinda fun. lots of piggly-wigglies and other relics of the state that you dont see in the triangle/Charlotte as much.
6 hours will also get you to Washington DC, Where there are plenty of touristy things to do in nice weather. However, I wouldn't call it an interesting drive if thats what you are looking for.
