Note the poll on the right, could Sega actually do something right and make a new 'NiGHTS'? Why is there no Shenmue or Jet Grind Radio? Was Flicker really that bad of a game? Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion.
Edit: It should also be noted that they did this for 'which Sonic character should get his own game. Shadow won and we got the excellent* 'Shadow The Hedgehog'.
Disco beats and blasting crazed orbots that have a nuclear warhead for a head? WINNAR.
Seriously though, I'd want to see a 3D Vectorman attempt that stayed true to his Orbot form, rather than trying to make him into some lame non-spherical "robot". With the Wii remote, I don't see why it couldn't be a 3rd person run-n-gun shooter. The action would be almost the same as the 2D offerings, only you could use the Wiimote to aim around the 3D space.
SEGA finds it impossible to listen to its customers.
For example, for about 5 years we have hated the ever loving guts out of the 3D sonic games.
Just do 2d, on the DS, some touchscreen usage, keep the speed of the originals and dont fuck about with Shadow or Big the Cat.
Sonic, Tails, Knuckles ONLY.
Seriously, give me a year and a small team of guys and I could make the next great Sonic game myself. Fuck this 3d on rails bullshit.
Sonic and the Secret Rings is the only half decent one, and even then it shits all over the reputation of the Genesis originals, which were and still are some of the best most pure games ever made. Fact.
Fuck. If their fans choose "Shadow" last time then SEGA shouldn't fucking listen to them.
Maybe I will send them this guide:
Not sure what to do next?
1. Q. Think what would SEGA have done in 1994?
(ProTip: Generally the answer will be come up with some super happy, nonsical, bright happy game, thats new. As in not reserecting something from years gone by.)
2. Do that.
3. Make sure it's bright and happy. Regardless of the genre.

I find your use of "we" interesting. Do you presume to speak for all of Sega's customers? The volume of 3D Sonic games would appear to suggest that people are buying them.

Actually I'm pretty sure they would have released another Sonic game.

The problem with Sega isn't that they might actually use the poll to decide what to work on.
The problem is that if NiGHTS wins, then we'll never see another Shenmue game again, because they'll think nobody wants it. And vice versa. They just don't understand that they listed 3 games that all deserve to have their franchises continued or (in the case of Shenmue) consolidated and finished.
EDIT: just followed the link and found out what's actually on the poll. Samba de Amigo should be a no-brainer on the Wii since it wouldn't require us to go buy any accessories ... but seriously Sega has a lot of awesome in their stable and they should use it.
NiGHTs.
Just because I want a chance to play it somehow, somewhere.
From what I remember about NiGHTs, it looks like it would make a really nice fit on the Wii. Of course, I last saw it circa 1995-1996 or something, being demoed at Meijer's.
I'm sure a few details have been dropped from memory in the last 10 years or so.

I find your use of "we" interesting. Do you presume to speak for all of Sega's customers? The volume of 3D Sonic games would appear to suggest that people are buying them.
Well from reading the opinions on these forums, and the opinions of game reviewers all across the board, it seems people have only been buying them to see if this one can regain the past glory. Most of the 3D sonic games have been reviewed pretty poorly (remember, we live in a 7-10 review scale in gaming land) and with most bottoming out at 70%s its clear they arent that good of a game.
SEGA is selling them on the brand. Sonic. But unlike Nintendo, each game has been released pretty soon after the last. Mario has a much larger gap between main games. Sunshine being the last true Mario game and Galaxy still a bit away.
Meanwhile SEGA has churned out 2 Sonic Adventure games, Sonic Riders, Shadow the Hedgehog ( a Sonic game with guns omg) and Secret Rings and the other one for 360 I cant remember the name. As well as maybe another I cant remember, all in the time since the start of the Dreamcast Era, which is pretty much the end of the N64 era.
Im not looking at the 2d games with rose tinted glasses. I still play them today and they are still absolutely great. Its not nostalgia, its just good game design and gameplay.
To say that Sonic has fallen from grace is pretty accurate. 1up even did a main feature on how Sonic Team should recoup their losses.
So yes, when I say 'we' I am indeed talking about not only the public, but the gaming media and gaming community. The new sonic games generally suck. They arent godawful, but still not very good by any means. Expecially when there was a time when Sonic rivalled Mario in game stakes easily.
A new NiGHTS game would be awesome, but honestly, if SEGA knocked out a nice little 2d sonic game, almost just like NSMB with enhanced graphics, some new features, a few mini games and wi fi, for the DS, maybe lumping Sonic 3 and Knuckles into one cart, I would buy it in a heartbeat, as would loads of other people who arent neccesarily sonic fans.
NSMB breathed new life into the 2d Mario franchise, it was a remake, but a great one. If there was ever a game that would benefit from this kind of work it was Sonic.

I voted for Samba de Amigo because it's probably more fun than NiGHTS

(tl:dr -- desperately want a new 2D sonic game a la NSMB)
You need to get a DS and you need to play Sonic Rush. It's absolutely fantastic, hella fast, has a second branch with Blaze that's actually good, and has updated graphics & sound.
And throw in some of the Sonic Advance games for good measure.
EDIT: I know it doesn't have the mini-games and wifi you want, but seriously... do you really need that to enjoy a 2D platformer?
Someone needs to fire Sega US an email saying "Make all of them."
Who's going to do that? Bill Gates? Because whoever does it, also needs to fire them a few tens of millions of dollars so they can afford to make ONE good game.

But that's only a very, very small percentage of Sega's customer base. Tube is right... as much as we hated it, Shadow actually sold pretty well.
Then again, the new Sonic sold anemically on the 360... then again again, anything that's not "mature" tends to sell poorly on that system (see: Viva Pinata).
Did anyone else play the 'NiGHTs score attack game on the GBA, it was a bonus for connecting GBA to GC with a few sega games (iirc, Billy Hatcher was one, I think PSO too)
It made me really hope for a GBA version of NiGHTs.

Really? What were the numbers for Viv Pinata, I actually enjoyed that game (Not that I generally admit to anyone I know IRL)
You know, Nights on the Nintendo DS might work out great. Use the stylus to trace out your flight path, loops and rolls...I doubt they could port it, though, or it would have already been done.

Hm, vgcharts.org has made it much harder to search for sales of individuals U.S. games.
But, from Nov. through Jan., Viva Pinata never appeared on the top 50.
This poll might actually have influence. I remember a while back there was a poll on Sega's site asking which Sonic supporting character should have his own game. Of course, everyone picked Shadow because everyone wanted a Sonic game. Too bad that didnt turn out well. But Sega did listen to its customers, which is important.
The same could be said of many games. That's not the issue.
The issue is, despite Secret Rings, do you have faith they'd actually do that?
I've noticed nobody's complained about Sega ruining F-Zero, remember they worked on GX?
And last I checked Virtua Fighter 5 is getting good reviews.
Really, other then Sonic Sega does a decent job. And they've thus far had no reason to do anything else with Sonic, judging by the way that the games have sold.
However, perhaps the less then stellar Sonic360 sales, and hopefully really good Secret of the Rings sales, will show otherwise.
Sonic360 didnt sell well? Thats a relief. Maybe Sega will actually realize they messed up. It amazes me how Shadow sold pretty decently, though. I guess little kids like the idea of a hedgehog with a pistol riding a corvette.
Also, I agree: People always seem to bash Sega as a whole these days, but really its mostly Sonic Team. The wacky camera has been pointed out in Sonic games since Adventure, for cripes sakes, and yet they still havent fixed it somehow. Well, Secret Rings did but that wasnt the main Sonic dev team. And I loved Sonic Rush too, but that was Dimps.
I figured it was more a Sonic Team thing, as NiGHTS would probably be done by them. Rush was an outside job, wasn't it? And Virtua Fighter 5 another team?

I am a freaking nerd.
Up to these posts, I'm surprised that people hadn't considered the fact that the LAST time there was a vote, the game came out bad.
So why do that to NiGHTS?

The game turned out bad because Sega was lazy and didn't actually, you know, fine tune the game and bug test it and stuff?
Really. That's been the biggest problem with their games since Sonic Heroes.
But Secret of the Rings lacks those problems, so, as lone as they do the same thing with this that they did with that then it's good.
Also I had voted for Tails.
