Receiving restitution from gamestop
No-QuarterNothing To FearBut Fear ItselfRegistered Userregular
Long story short. I have credit from gamestop, wanted to buy starcraft2. They didn't have it, but guy at desk told me of a store that did. I asked him before I left if the credit was in the system, he said yes. I drive 20 some odd minutes to the other store. Guy at the desk says he can't do the transaction because the store credits are stored locally. Drive another 20 some odd minutes back to original gamestop. Guy at desk was apologetic- major oversight on his part, they could order it, he could pick it up tomorrow yadda yadda. I'm pissed because I had my time ,and more importantly- gas money wasted. I asked for restitution and basically the best they can do is 5 bucks- in credit which means I'd have to buy something else. I'm honestly a little pissed. What are my options and chances of actually getting some form of compensation because they basically wasted 15 dollars of my gas, and my time, and got me friggin heated on top of it.

You really don't have any options. I am surprised they offered you five bucks. You're option is to just not shop at that GameStop anymore.
Honestly, it sounds like an honest mistake the kid made and while you are mad, I would just let it go. Take the five bucks and move on, because taking it any farther is kind of silly. Are you going to sue them in small claims over 15 bucks?
I guess you can try and call corporate, but I doubt that gets you anywhere.
yeah your chances of getting anything out of them are pretty close to zero. i had one of those softie managers who bent over backwards for customers at gamestop and i've never heard of anyone getting a discount for bad customer service.

That wasn't even bad customer service, it was an honest mistake. The kid was apologetic and not rude, he just made a mistake. Bad customer service would have been him making that mistake, and then being a jackass when you came back.

Dude it's an honest mistake, deal with it.
I don't know what you do for a living, but I'm sure you fucked up at least once in your career, and I'm willing to bet your management didn't offer some big cash payout as an apology for it.
I can understand being upset about driving from one place to another, but in the grand scheme of things, it's not the biggest thing in the world. I'm surprised they even offered you five dollars in credit.
if you're speaking about restitution in the specific legal sense, then no, you don't have a cause of action. the customer service mistake of a GameStop employee is simply too remote from your decision to drive to another store. the mistake did not cause you to drive, nor "lose" gas.
i understand you might be upset, but this is really minor. move on.

i believe the proper way is to march in, pull off your glove and smack him across the face shouting 'I demand restitution!". Make sure you have an honorable steward to serve as your second though he will get to choose the choice of weapons.

Well, technically you could have done every last bit of this over the phone, and that would have cost you literally nothing except a few minutes.
Your only reasonable course of action here is to learn a lesson about calling first before you spend gas on a big trip to one or more stores.
And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn
I'd add real quickly that you'll probably live a longer, happier life if you save feeling angry for situations where someone has acted in bad faith. I'm not going to jump on the band wagon of saying that burning $15 bucks of gas is no big deal because, I don't know, maybe your wallet's feeling a little light right now or something. And yes, you could have made a phone call yourself to verify, but I can also see why you'd feel it was reasonable to trust the word of the guy behind the counter on the assumption that the employee would probably know how this particular system works (although since he's an employee of a single retailer I would also understand why he didn't know how things work beyond the operation of his own store). Is it a bother? Sure. Go ahead and feel bothered.
But it's kind of silly to feel "friggin' heated" over it, right? He didn't purposefully mislead you, he didn't somehow materially benefit from the inconvenience he inadvertently caused you, he was contrite, and he looked for some way to try and make it better to the extent that his business's policies allow. There's a lot of stuff in the world that's worth getting angry about, don't get me wrong, but if you're going to get your dander up every time someone makes a minor, honest mistake like this, you're going to have a heart attack before you're 50.
...Hey, also? I get the gas money complaint, but complaining about how this guy supposedly wasted your time? Dude, you went to a Gamestop to buy Star Craft, and when they didn't have it, you were willing to drive to a completely different Gamestop in order to purchase a copy that day rather than waiting for your local store to get it the next day. Let's not pretend there's some huge opportunity cost associated with the 40 minutes you spent round trip, dude, because we all know exactly what you were planning on doing with that time to begin with: you were going to spend the rest of the afternoon playing Star Craft. Which, you know, awesome, it's a great game! But it's not such a great game that we should delude ourselves into believing that it's a Very Important Thing Which You Should Have Been Doing. That's just not psychologically healthy.
They sell starcraft 2 in stores? I always thought it was ethereal and existed on the intertron only.
They still sell most games in stores, though for the vast majority of us, there's really no reason to buy them there, except for Special/Collectors Editions and such.
Considering Gamestop only offered me $25 for Prototype 2 a few weeks ago, i'm not surprised you aren't getting much restitution. You should take the $5, and be happy with that.

If you want to make money off your used games, put them on Craigslist. Selling them to someone else who is just going to sell them means you're going to make less. Gamestop needs to make a profit of your game, and if they give you what you want, they're not going to see much profit at all. I've never understood people who complain about selling things to a middleman.

First world problems.
As has been said, deal with it.

There's really nothing you can do, and the guy apologized. Just take the $5 worth of credit.
