I've got a very good computer coming in the mail, what games/programs should I get?
I have not had a computer capable of running any programs more advanced than basic flash games for a number of years now, and because of this I haven't kept up with much of any computer games or programs. I now have a computer coming in that can run damn near anything coming in the mail soon. What would you suggest I get for it?
Pick up any of the current indie bundles. Lots of great games for cheap, with proceeds going to charity. The current Humble Bundle V is fantastic, with Bastion, Psychonauts, and a lot of other great games. You shouldn't pass this one up.

Seriously. Just frequent the Steam thread and join in discussion there. The summer sale is coming, and you can spend $100 and end up with two dosen fantastic titles.
They also put giant packs of games on sale for cheap. So, for example, you could snag Fallout 3 GOTY, New Vegas, Morrowing, Oblivion, and Skyrim for maybe $50.
If you want to find a few games to play in the meantime, check the Steam store every day at 1PM EDT. That is when their daily deal flips over. Looking quickly at the deals today, the King Arthur collection is $12. It's basically Total War but with a fantasy theme.
There are also free-to-play games that make money by selling boosts, cosmetic items, etc. Super Monday Night Combat is a good one. Tribes: Ascend. League of Legends. Team Fortress 2. If you're looking to try out an MMO, Lord of the Rings Online is free to play.
I play pretty much everything. I'm just as likely to pick up an indie game like Super Meat Boy or an action/adventure game like Pyschonauts as I am to pick up a JRPG or an FPS like Battlefield or COD. The only thing I don't play are MMOs because I have spent too many hours in the past on them, I like having a life.

As a huge CoD fan for the last ~5-6 years, you really shouldn't be playing CoD on PC. No one should be. The developers really take no effort on the PC front.

Get Battlefield if you want FPS on PC, not CoD.
Uhhhhhh not sure what you're talking about but uhhhh
Anyway, the Mass Effect series sounds right up your alley.

If you want something really pretty to give your graphics card a bit of a workout, have a go at Metro 2033.
Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City are both fantastic sandbox-ish beat 'em ups with rpg elements.
the Mass Effect games are good (although i've yet to experience the supposedly bad ending of ME3)
SKYRIM...although you might want to wait for the new DLC to drop, might be a sale with it.
both Bioshock games are awesome in gameplay and graphics.
if you like city/civ building games, Civ V is awesome. hell, so is Civ IV.
i'd pick up Borderlands just for shits and giggles, but it's basically an FPS version of Diablo 2 and 3, so your mileage may vary. fun multiplayer though.
otherwise, yeah, the Steam Summer sale always has incredible deals. you might just want to hold off until that kicks in.

I'm pretty sure he does know what he's talking about.
If your playing PC FPSs then COD is not exactly the cream of the crop. If you like COD then by all means get it, but honestly if your looking for a fast paced arcadey FPS there are so many other titles I'd put above CoD on the PC.
Metro 2033, The witcher (2, i could hardly play through the first, although you really should if you want to play 2), mass effect, skyrim, all really good games that will look super pretty on your new computer.

I'm not really sure why I would put a bad game on my list of good games, so... yes?
Hey @TychoCelchuuu noticed you have Alpha Protocol on your lis and despite being a fan of Obsidian's other titles and a die hard PC gamer I missed this title when it was a thing and I don't currently have a gaming rig. I do however, have a 360. How much would I miss out on playing on my couch?
I think it's kind of glitchy on consoles because it never got patched but otherwise it's the same game.

MASS EFFECT 2 is one of the all-time greats, in my opinion the second best game (after WOW) of the last ten years. I hadn't played MASS EFFECT 1 and so picked it up just to give it a try and was absolutely blown away by its quality.

And you can get DLC to give you a run down of the story in ME1 and also allow you to make all the choices in it if you don't choose to play through that excellent game as well.

Grab the Steam client. Ask about sales and game deals that are currently active.
Mostly, people will need to know what kind of games you are looking for and what you like.

This man has Freedom Fighters on his list, thus he is correct about everything all the time.
first time i've seen a mention of Endless Space outside of G+T. is it really that good?

But... but the list also has Dear Esther, and is thus invalid!
If you don't like Dear Esther, it is you, sir, who is invalid.
But yeah, come hang out in the Steam thread. You will have armloads of games by the end of the summer sale.
