[PATV] Tuesday, August 30, 2011 - Extra Credits Season 2, Ep. 13: Games You Might Not Have Tried&
I have to say, I'm glad you mentioned The World Ends With You. At least in my opinion, it's the best game for the DS I've ever played at least, and easily one of the best games Square Enix has made ever. Makes full use of the DS controls, amazing soundtrack, great characters and story.
For another DS game 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors (999) is another fantastic game that isn't that well known I think. It's not for everybody though, it's a puzzle game were you grab items from your surroundings, put them together and use them to advance. But the Story is amazing, the game has several endings, many choices that effect what happens. All the endings connect, it's a mystery game and each ending tells you more about what happened, so you have to play it multiple times to find everything out.
You've mentioned the game before, and at least with my friends it wasn't that well known untill I made them all play it, but Persona 4 for the Ps2. Amazing RPG and still outclasses anything I've played for the 360/Ps3 yet.
Fate of the World - Turn based strategy game where you try and keep the world alive until 2200 rather then outright conquest
Knights in the Nightmare - Strategy Shooter Role Playing game, FF tactics meets Ikaruga
Europa Universalis/Victoria 2/Hearts of Iron 3 - Super Deep Historical strategy games
Valkyria Chronicles - Cel shaded Strategy game where you issue commands and then take control of individual units and do some shooting, decent story, yet tone inconsistant
~~RPGs~~
The World Ends With You - Complex Dual screen fight system with a cool style and awesome soundtrack
Kings Field (the Ancient city)/Demon Souls - PS2 FPRPG that is very difficult, yet still fair if you pay attention to your surroundings
Radiant Historia - Chrono Trigger-y RPG with an interesting take on time travel and choice, combat mechanics are more engageing then typical RPGs
Desktop Dungeons - Exploration is a limited resource
~~Action~~
Super Crate Box - Action Platformer where you have to mix up your strategy
~~Fighting~~
Final Fantasy Dissidia - Simple yet effective fighting system with rpg elements as well, incredibly deep
~~Horror~~
Amnesia the Dark Descent - Excellent horror game, you've probably heard of it by now
~~Adventure~~
Ghost Trick (Phantom Detective) - Phoniex Wright with more gameplay
Professor Layton - Fun for all ages puzzle game, think Miyazaki films interspersed with brainteasers
~~Flash~~
Today I Die - Interactive Poem
Every Day the Same Dream/One Chance - dreary Art games
The Company of Myself - similar to The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom but with diary excerpt and less of a visual style
The End of Us - Friendship and attachment portrayed by asteroids
Freedom Bridge - A game about the bridge between North and South Korea
Passage - A representation of life in 5 minutes
~~Puzzle~~
Might and Magic Clash of Heroes - Puzzle Quest using Puzzle Drop mechanics
Spacechem - Uh...
Ilomilo - Cute puzzle game with an excellent atmosphere, also multiplayer
SpaceChem has eaten more of my time than any other game of the last few years. It's just brilliant! A deep, challenging and fascinating puzzle game in every moment.
A game series nobody seems to ever talk about is Rhythm Heaven. Nintendo's take on the rhythm genre may be really late, but it's the simplest in premise the genre can possibly have: Press A to the rhythm (or in the DS game, tap or stroke the touch screen). It's impressive that each game has 60 to 70 variations on that same premise. The music is also top-notch and helps carry the feel of each individual stage and sometimes tells a story through it alone.
I'm surprised Yume Nikki (lit. dream diary) wasn't mentioned in the video, or the comments itself. It's an exploration game made by some Japanese person I cant remember the name of, about a young (preumably around 13) shut-in, and more specifically, the surreal, and sometiems unsettling dreamscape of hers that you explore. The music drones in a manner that is just so fitting, the dreamscape is so bleak but vivid at the same time, it manages to create an experience that (even before you get bored and rush to the ending to find the last few effects) will last you for hours at least. If you dont use a guide? It's possible you may never 'finish' the game. But considering how depressing the ending is that might be a good thing. Not to mention that spending days exploring every area and finding every secret isn't too bad either.
If you like games that show and dont tell, if you like exploration, and surreal art, then you should definatly give it a go. You can likely find it floating somewhere on the internet, its free, and even untranslated, its fine. As long as you know which moon symbols are 'bicycle' and 'umbrella' or 'yuki-onna', then you can get everywhere you need to go. Theres no dialogue anyway. The fan-games based on yume nikki are also worth a look, such as '.flow'. I havent played it though. I'm easily scared and .flow is apparently scarier than yume nikki so nope.jpg.
I should also say thank you for these videos, for being both entertaining and informative. I just went and played all the flash games you mentioned, and will keep an eye out for the other games also.
For M.M.O. Ultima Online! It is way under apreasiated but well worth a play. I know it isn't free which is why I don't curently play it. but it really is exactly what an M.M.O. should be. and best yet it is Instance free!
Personally Thugorp I played Ultima Online from it's initial beta release. The only real PROBLEM with the game currently is that it was modeled originally on a player driven narative, and virtually no one plays it anymore. I reopened my old account with UO a couple of months ago just to see what was still kickin, and it was a ghost town.
It totally deserves a mention: as of November of 2012, RuneScape is basically a different game; I urge anyone who thought it looked dumb or got bored of it years ago to pick it up. The combat requires you to do more than eat food now! It's got real gameplay! Plus it's browser-based and free indefinitely.
How have none of you mentioned Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon yet? It's probably my favorite Wii game, and it's certainly on my list of "games people should play before they die." It's thought-provoking, it will probably make you cry (I cried like a baby). I literally made an account just to mention Fragile Dreams. Anyone who says that Wii games have bad graphics, play this game, look me dead in the eye, and tell me those weren't some really beautiful artistically done graphics. I dare you.
Dungeon Fighter Online is getting shut down pretty soon. Loved the game, and really hope another company picks it back up, but it's looking pretty bleak.

I'm happy with this phrase. Just... anime pop psychology. A little more meta than the matrix. Such a good way to convey that.
