I bought a PSP today and with it I bought a Sony PSP Case that can hold 2 UMD and a memory Stick. I also bought Gurumin: A Monstorious Adventure for it from EB Games. Since they were out of the memory sticks I have to get one.
My question is this, what size do I need the sticks to be? I heard there was a 4 gig and a 2 gig one as well as the 512 and the 256. How much space does each game's save take place? Do I need batteries for it? [Note I haven't opened it yet as its for my trip to Japan and something to do on the plan. 12hr on a plane is long.] What are my recharging options?
Game saves are usually less than a megabyte each, so you can fit several hundred of them on the standard 1 gigabyte stick. The best deal right now would be a 2 gig card, it has the best dollars-to-megabye ratio.
The batteries are built in and you pretty much have to have a wall socket if you only got the default pack. You can buy car chargers (cigarette lighter style) as well although those aren't as effective. You can get a kit that has a heavy-duty battery and a 4 gig hard drive built into it, but they're nearly as expensive as the PSP itself.
Don't buy the Pro Duo sticks from a retail store right away; they gouge you on prices. I'd glance at Cheapassgamer or Newegg and see what's on sale. I managed to get two 1GB sticks for $10 each, but that was a pretty rare deal. I think I've seen 2Gb sticks for about $25-40 fairly often.
Game saves are fairly small; each of mine range from 100kB to 500kB. You'll only need the larger sticks if you're looking to do video and audio, which you might as well since you have the thing already.
And yeah, you should open it and charge it before you get on a plane. It comes with an AC adapter; you can buy a USB recharging cord, if you have a laptop or whatever, to charge it remotely.
if your just using it for game saves, a 512 or 256 will go a long way. But as soon as you start putting videos, music, downloadable content, demos, you will run out of space fast. That said, i have a 1gig stick, and it was only ever totally full when i had homebrew on it. Now i have several demos, a couple BSG episodes and some video podcasts, and all the Wipeout packs, and it still has about 200mg left.

With the question to Video, can I import my videos to it, ala the IPod? Or do I have to buy movies for it just to watch videos? I am looking more specifically for my Anime DVD's to convert it and watch it.
How long do the battery last? I know this is not related to the PSP but is there a difference in voltage between NA and Japan?

I use PSP Video 9 to put stuff on my PSP; it plays nice with a lot of different video codecs and formats. And I think DVD Encoder to take stuff off of my DVDs ...? I forget the name of the app right now, but you can use Google to find a whole slew of things.
PSP Video 9 will do most computer video files. I'm not sure about DVDs though.
The battery life depends on what you do with it. Games will drain it relatively quickly (around 6 hours maybe?) but just videos it will last much longer. Also, screen brightness affects the battery life obviously.
You can get around 3 hours of battery playback on it before you need a recharge.
Get PSP video9, it's a free converter that does a good job of converting mpeg and divx movies into a psp compatible format.
Huh?!?!?
I consistently pull 7-8 hours keeping the brightness low.
Is that when playing a game? My battery estimator always says I have about 3 to 3.5 hours of charge left after I recharge it, althugh I always have it at full brightness, so maybe that's why.
You can reduce the brightness and lower the volume to boost battery power. I haven't really clocked how strong my battery is; the timer says I have 3:35, but I never trust those things anyway. You can always buy another battery if'n you like (I heard rumors they're on clearance at Toys R Us, but that's YMMV). Also, games and other things running off the UMD drive will burn battery life faster than audio/video from the memory stick.

How hard is it to get the extra battery and PSP to Airport security? Will they confiscate it or something?
Is there any other accessories that I need? Do normal Headjacks work?

Airport security will let you take all sorts of shit through. I take hard drives, power cables, batteries...
They are trained to recognise bomb equipment from computer equipment.

Ah I see. Thanks for that.
Also is there a back light on it or no? I am asking sicne my flight is in the evening will I be able to play it ifthe lights are turned off or will I need to open a lamp?
Also, and this is mentioned EVERY time there's a PSP thread...for good reason: get the Sega Genesis Collection.
I already have it for the PS2. I rather not get the same game twice. Int his vein no Disgaea since I already own it for the PS2. I got the PSP for its own brand on unqiue JRPG's/SRPG's.
If you have the ability to downgrade, and you feel confortable with it. I suggest you do so.
You get...
1) Unlocked PS1 compatibility
2) Unlocked video playback at full screen and full custom bitrates for video and audio.
3) Wireless Digital radio via PSPRadio.
4) Wireless file transfer ability via FTP
5) The ability to theme the XMB like so....
Do not upgrade to 3.0+ if you don't have a PS3. (Even with a PS3, the upgrade is questionalbe) That upgrade is worthless and does nothing but give you a bunch of gimmicks.
256M is adequate for game saves and miscellaneous homebrew applications, but if you're going to use your PSP to play PSOne games (a course of action I highly recommend you take), go for the gold and get at LEAST a 1G memory stick. Even when compressed, those games take a lot of room, and it's a bugger to have to constantly erase games on the stick to make room for others.
Also, can I make a non-recommendation? Whatever you do, wherever you do it, DON'T buy Ys: The Ark of Nephistism. It's a horrendous role-playing game with tiny characters and some of the longest load times in history. Steer clear of Monster Hunter Freedom, too... frankly, I'm not sure what the Japanese see in this one. You'll do everything BUT hunt monsters when you first start the game (fishing? Cooking meat? Oh joy!), and without a second analog stick, the battles are awkward and frustrating.
Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.
If you're looking for some fun platformers, Daxter and Ratchet & Clank have been getting really good reviews.
It seems to me like you didn't really look into the PSP beyond the Sony name before you bought it, just from the questions you asked. It's a solid system with nearly endless potential, and the good games keep coming. Metal Gear was great.
I just got a PSP today myself. And I have a question, what kind of screen protector? And case should I get to make sure my precious stays..well precious?
I also got DR with it..when I have more money, I have a slew of games I'm going to rape with my dollars.
For screen protectors, I've got one of the stick on lamanent clear ones. It came in a pack of three and I've had the first one on it for about a year now, just make sure to get the bubbles out.

Further abbreviation of Tekken: DR, or Dark Resurrection.

I would second this, especially given the OP's well-known tastes. :P It has Phantasy Star II, III and IV, which is hands-down some of the best JRPGing you can get for $30 of your mere Earth dollars.
Or just go here to get it for $30 USD and free shipping
Yay, my hint has worked. I'm about 6 hours into Tales of Eternia and it's delicious. Full English voice acting!
Ah, I was hoping someone would mention it. I bought it yesterday for a freaking insane price (NZ$40, it's normally NZ$90) but I've decided I'm going to hold off from playing it until after I finish FFXII.
I also picked up Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror and Tekken: Dark Resurrection a month or so back with a really good deal (2 games for the price of 1). With deals like this you'd think the PSP was dead over here but it's quite the opposite (Daxter is consistantly in the top 10, with Tekken: DR usually a couple of places behind it).
Would I really need the screen protector if I have the case with it? I mean I don't think the PSP has a touch screen. Does it sratch that easily?
It never hurts. It's a sub-$10 investment in protecting that big, beautiful screen. I got one (not Hori, but that was just because I was impatient, I'd vouch for the Horis) for $5 and it went it on very smooth.

Everyone, and I do mean everyone, has a widely different opinion about screen protectors. They used ot have major arguements about them for the DS, trust me. If you don't feel you need one, don't get one. I don't like them personally, but as a result my PSP screen has all kinds of tiny scratches... that have all arrisen from just cleaning the thing with the soft cloth it came with to clean it. They are absolutely not noticible while playing games though. So, again, its up to you whether you think its worth it or not.
As for games, get Tales of Eternia and thank us all later. Also, Valkyrie Profile is great too. Gurumin is a good choice. Beyond that, I'm not sure if there are too many other JRPG/SRPG that are worth it. Most are ports with really, really crappy load times. There are some nice ones that SE has announced, but you'll have to wait for those of course. If you expand beyond just that genre though, there is a wealth of good games on the PSP. If you want to know what else I would recommend, just ask. Hope you enjoy the PSP, it really is a great system, despite the general consensus of the PA forums.

On the subject of the Zero Punctuation Bioshock Review:
I didn't much care for the Bioshock review. It didn't deliver on the funnies like the previous reviews, but it wasn't bad.
The ending was very weak, though. Usually his videos have good endings.
Did you just review a review?
I found reVerse's review to be too short and a little light on content and quality. Still, his punctuation and sentence structure was better than most.
