Cryengine 2 @ GDC: OH GOD I JUST CAME
Posts
It does look pretty good...
I never asked for this!
So this is what we need 4 Gigs of Video memory for.
Now calculate the cost of a PC that will comfortably run this game at the "All my dicks are cumming" video setting.
I hope you weren't planning on sending your kids to college.

Photorealism in 4 years or I'll be pissed.
I have a hard time getting excited over new graphics engines anymore. I'm glad things look prettier but I'd like to see engines that introduce compelling new game play opportunities. Destructible environments are nice, but it seems like we've had that option for a while now.
THIS CANNOT BE DONE!
Oh my fucking god.
I hope this engine finds its way into multiple other games. I really, really want to explore such rediculously beautiful environments. RPGs would suit this perfectly.
edit: I want to know what hellish beast of a system the developer was running for the sandbox video. Good god.
edit2: Just watched the tech trailer.
The nuke.
It, literally, made my jaw hang open. No game engine has ever done that. My motherfucking god.

Crysis (along with Bioshock) is one reason why I've earmarked a grand for my next machine. Goddamn. I just hope those aliens aren't the Crysis equivalent to Trigens.
...But I wont.
I just can't see ANY reasonable connection having a chance of keeping track of all the physics going on in any one map.

But I'm just being a wet blanket. This was awesome to look at and it definitely holds a shitton of potential.
Yeah, all the gameplay videos I've seen of Crysis didn't really do anything for me, but I really would play through it if I had a high-end PC just for the graphics.
for that, and how insanely easy it looks to create things with? ill spend 1500 on a rig that can run it at its best.
without a doubt.
unreal 3 is beautiful, but this is going to seriously set the bar, and then become the new standard if they license it well.

Holly hell.
But they ARE doing creative things with it. Just not in the manner you think. Do you have any idea how much a pain in the ass a regular editor is? How much of a nightmare baked-in lighting is?
Having completely dynamic lighting and shaders like this totally empowers the artists, and makes their job easier --- less time spent on getting the damn thing to work and look right -- and more time spent on the actual artistry as they should -- sculpting the levels, adding in details, perfecting the atmosphere.
Less time spent working with a workstation and mouse, and more time actually imagining and drawing the art, and creating a better and more immersive play environment.
...Though it must also be mentioned that they are using this technology in creativity of a more traditional sense -- that day/night varying and adjustable shaders isn't just there for show, for instance. The game will actually be running on a GTA-esque day/night cycle, and further in the game, the environment is supposed to change:

As for destructible trees?
Imagine this thing coming at you from a mile away, an seeing the entire forest parting and being crushed the closer it comes.
Yeah... uh... That would be another one of my threads too...

I actually hyperventilated a bit.
I...I might be willing to drop a chunk of my TA money on a new computer for games like this.
Pfff, dumb asses, Rancor doesn't taste like chicken.
Oh, and that was an awesome demonstration.

Infuriatingly close. One more engine iteration down and I think we got it.
Is this coming to the 360? Or is it going to cost me a hell of a lot to get this and Bioshock (instead of just a lot)
Until you zoom in.
By then textures may be grown (think spore, but on a much smaller/larger scale).
Eh, the biggest problem I see with those shots involve the textures and lighting. If things start heading towards a more procedural route, we might start seeing procedural textures... so that instead of having 2-3 different textures for leaves you literally have 2-3 thousand different variations in the same scene.
And lighting just keeps getting better and better all the time. All we're really missing there is global illumination (objects effecting the colors of surrounding objects because of light bouncing around). But that's just a little too far out there at the moment.
I think they said 360 and PS3 were getting Crysis in some form, but not a port of the PC game, like they did with Far Cry. It wont look nearly this good though, because neither console supports DX10.
Of course it's not photo realistic...
Holy crap, my eyes..
