Hey folks! About a month ago I graduated from MICA with my BFA in Illustration. I was wondering if i could get some advice on looking for freelance illustration work. I've applied to every open position I've found on gamedevmap and creativeheads, but now I don't know where else to go for my particular brand of illustration. I'm trying to work in the game industry as a concept artist, but i work in other genres such as book illustration, comics, and poster design. Anybody know any good resources they would like to share? Thanks! www.zach-illustration.com http://zachalexanderillustration.blogspot.com
Your art is fantastic. You will certainly be able to get work - it just might take time.
A game with your style would be great, but its going to take a very particular project. Either something indie, or an art director with more than a little sway. Alternatively, phone/tablet games have a need for illustration rather than concept, and seem to be more open to more idiosyncratic styles. Look through www.gamedevmap.com
But to be honest, I feel like you would be happier outside of games. Magazines/comics/book illustration would fit you better I think. Maybe take a look at getting Artists Graphic Designers Market or 2012 Childrens Writers Illustrators Market books. They are fairly large lists of companies that use illustration, what sort of stuff they need, how many illustrators a year then need, how many new illustrators a year they use, what their contact info is, and what their first contact/submission rules are.
Good luck. Don't get discouraged. Theres a lot of waiting. You'll wait for a month and then hear back from 4-5 places in the span of two/three days in my experience.
Thanks, I will try to be patient. And thanks for the links too, I will definitely take a look and start tossing my portfolio at people. I've already made a full pass at every developer I could either apply or submit work to on gamedevmap, but that site hasn't been updated in a while. There were plenty of broken links and spam pages mixed in with the real deal. Indie games are definitely a goal for me.
I mainly want to work in games because I see them as a great creative collaborative project. I also think that video games as an interactive medium really have the possibility to let the player be immersed in an experience which has a lot of possibilities. Don't get me wrong, I love book and comic illustrations and would get plenty of creative satisfaction by making them, but there is something still very enticing about making work that is involved in a game project. Games themselves are just fascinating to me.
