Animation-friendly video editing software

I am looking for this.

I've got access to Vegas Pro, and while it's a powerful tool, some animations are extremely tedious to do when just using keyframes. Specifically: I want text that types itself out across the screen. The only way to do this in Vegas Pro that I can see is to set a new keyframe for each letter you'd like to be typed

This isn't feasible for typing a large amount of text.

Does anyone know of software, preferable open source, that is animation friendly and still reasonably powerful?

I know nothing about vegas pro, but perhaps another way of doing this text effect is to simply have a mask that slides across and unmaks it letter by letter.

You want After Effects. This can be done in AE with masks, scripting, or various plugins.

Yeah, most times "typing" animation is faked using masks. I don't know of any programs that will "tween" text attributes easily.

Not to rag on the idea, but watching text type itself won't hold a shot for very long - is there a specific reason to need to have a bunch of text type itself out on screen?
