So Colorado is on fire, quite close to where some of my friends currently live/grew up. This is worrying. :(

There isn't anything special to understand. Like eating waffles is like eating anything else, just with more delicious than most other things.

I've been having ridiculously banal dreams lately, like I went to see the new Amazing Spider-Man and it sucked

or I talked to Pony and he told me that I shouldn't buy him something I was planning to

    It's weirding me out

Oh, so you're talking about waffle fries?

Those are easy too. Put them in mouth, chew, enjoy.

I still need to read the book.

Hell, I need to read more in general. I should start doing that in the mornings and evenings on the train/bus instead of reading news on my phone. And playing Cafeteria Nipponica.

I prefer the manga, both because it goes into more detail about the students and their relationships and because I felt it had a better translation than the book.

My take on the Battle Royale film is that, in addition to tackling themes like intergenerational conflict and government oppression, it's supposed to be a bit like a dark parody of soap opera-style teen melodramas. The kids fall into the various archetypes for those shows, and they're each absorbed in the teenage dramatics of crushes and rivalries even when they're being forced to fight to the death. Basically, imagine the cast of Beverly Hills 90210 foolishly wandering onto the island from The Most Dangerous Game and you'll have an idea of what Battle Royale is supposed to be.

So, a few days ago, I was driving by a nearby park and I saw a huge murder of crows hanging out in some shaded areas. So, I go home, grab my camera, and head back. I take some pictures, observing how awesome crows are, etc. And then the crows in this one section of grass start flying off one-by-one in quick succession. I initially thought I had spooked them, but then a minute later, the sprinklers came on in that section. The crows fucking knew the sprinkler schedule or so I hypothesize.

Fever dreams are wild. As are dreams on any sort of narcotic painkiller. I had hernia surgery last year, and I had crazy, vivid, dreams when I was on the painkillers.

    Oh man, those are weird.

I've never had a lucid dream before. The concept intrigues me.

They can be... very... something. The something depending on what type of dream. I've had several of them. One I realized I could bend the dreamscape and ended up using awesome things to get out of a bad situation, then pretty much screwed around as a deity for the rest of the dream. Another one I was lucid enough to know I was in an awful dream, but, your power to alter the world is entirely dependent upon your belief that you can do so. So I had to sit and watch that one unfold, because I was conscious enough to observe, but because it was a bad place my attempts to change it were done out of fear and consequently worried and lacking confidence. Self-doubt made me unable to alter that one.

So they are really fascinating experiences. There's something really surreal about that experience, where you actually have to believe to make something happen. And seeing where you go, when you aren't fully in control of yourself is fascinating too. You're uninhibited because that part's asleep, so when you wake up you can look back and see behaviors and desires that you didn't realize you had.

There are techniques you can use to try and induce them. One is something like waking up after sleeping for six hours, staying up for a couple of hours, then going to bed. If you have a few days and are curious, it's definitely worth giving a shot. You'll either learn something or have pretty much the only experience where you can do everything you've ever wanted. Fly around the Earth? Sure, why not. Switch genders? Ok. Turn into a bear? Why not? Turn into a switched-gender bear and fly around the Earth? Also you are drinking delicious tea?

If you can get one where you're fully conscious, then you can have a very wonderful experience. Even the lessened consciousness ones can be great, though you might look back and think "wait, what the hell? I chose playing chess over flying a jet? I thought THAT was the more awesome idea?"

Full confession: I realized I was in a dream once and thought "Wait, I can do whatever I want. I can alter the world to my whim, have sex, fight Agent Smith..."

Then I concluded that I had to continue searching for the dragon balls. Because that was the more pressing concern, you see.

If you haven't kept up with the fires in Colorado the last day or two, it's gone to hell. 32,000 people have been evacuated, over 6,000 acres have been burned, police have blockaded large portions of Colorado Springs, and we've lost a number of structures. My old house is about 1 mile away from it right now. I do not expect it to survive.

Blugh, speaking of dreams, my night terrors have gotten much worse recently. It's gotten to the point where I can feel them coming before I go to sleep (like right now). I basically have to be completely exhausted if I want to avoid them.

Seeing a doctor about it tomorrow, though, so hopefully that'll help.
