Running games from an external (USB 3.0) hard drive. Viable?

Good morning.

So I just ordered a new laptop with an SSD. The trade off being space.
I'm just wondering whether anyone has experience in storing games on an external HD and running them from there? Given that I only play games at a desk, it wouldn't be too difficult for me to operate like this - assuming it's viable. I have a Seagate GoFlex 2TB drive with USB 3.0 that I'd like to use.

Thoughts?

I dont know that it matters, but just in case, the laptop is one of the new rMBP's and games will be run via bootcamp. I'd also like to store raw video from my camera and for usage with iMovie in this way too... so if anyone has any specific thoughts on that, it's be a bonus.

USB 3.0 is plenty fast enough; just make sure the HDD and the interface aren't shit inside that USB 3.0 device.

Lots of companies slapping crap 5400 RPM POS drives with sketchy barely SATA I interfaces into a USB3 enclosure.

Get REAL results on what the read/write speed is before you buy. USB3 is only 1/3 of the info you should be caring about.

Thanks - that's good to know. I guess the proof will be in the testing...

Hmmm, in terms of r/w speeds, what numbers would put me in the ball park?

Most games will run on USB 2.0 just fine. As a point of reference here.

7200 RPM is pretty common. More cache the better. Most games dont require really fast hard drives though, it will affect load times, you may get jitter when walking into a new area but it will work acceptabily well.

Oh and if you have the option to use esata, use that instead.

you could also use something like SteamMover to keep the games on your external and move just the one you want to play atm over.
