So I just upgraded my monitor to a nice big widescreen and now I feel like my speakers on my computer are severely lacking, so I was hoping to get some good suggestions for replacements, the current once are just once that came outa the box, harmon/kardon.

Also will I need to upgrade my sound card as well?

What kind of sound card do you have now? If you're buying a 5.1 system, you can't really use onboard sound. Get a dedicated soundcard like the Audigy 2 ZS or similar and you'll notice a great improvement. As for soundsystems, it depends on your price range. If you're within the ~$400 area, most people here would recommend the Logitech z-5500, at least if you're going for a 5.1 system. The z-5300 is what I have, I picked it up for ~$250, very similar setup except the volume knob isn't as cool. I would still heartily recommend it, though.

No as far as I am aware you won't need to upgrade your sound card unless you get some kind of super speakers that aren't just plug and play. Not sure of any that aren't plug and play actually.

First, I think you might need to specify a few things. Price range, 2 speaker/surround sound?

For 2 speakers, I would suggest JBL Creature 2. I'm using Creature, which is almost exactly the same as Creature 2 as far as I can tell, and they have worked perfectly fine for me. Plus, they aren't bad in price.
