Burning a Music CD/DVD

So, a friend of mine's birthday is coming up and one of the things I know she wants is a mix tape. Alas, this is something I have had little interest in doing in the past, but I do know my way around a computer so I'll try.

So, how would you go about doing this (legally, of course)? I have the rewritable DVDs (she plays her music from her DVD player), though I can get different media, if needed. From what I've googled, it looks like a DVD ripper program will be required (any recommendations on a free one?). And, finally, where can I actually buy/download the music from? itunes, or perhaps some other site? Anything else I will need?

Thanks in advance for any help!

You'd probably just want to buy some CD-RWs and use iTunes. DVD players play CDs as well. You don't need a DVD ripper program unless you're planning on making a mix with several thousand songs.

If you can get the music DRM free, that will help you a lot, amazon.com is said to sell mp3s without DRM or protection. In case that you already own music CDs, you may extract tracks using a free program called Audiograbber and the Lame mp3 codec. Burning will be kind of trivial task once you have the files.

PowerISO let's you make an audio CD from MP3s, automagically. I use it when I make my audio CDs for my old-as-fuck car. It's also free.
Create a new Audio CD, select the MP3s you want, click burn, ??????, profit.

Even Windows Media Player will let you burn to a CD. It'll do any common format, if you have something more exotic like FLAC you might need something more specialized. But WMP always did most of the burning jobs I wanted. Nero did a great job too but I don't think there was every a legit free version.

On a side note, this thread makes me feel old. There was a time when burning a CD was something people did on a regular basis!
