Apparently "Tales of the Abyss" beat sales expectations and was part of what encouraged them to localize more Tales games in the future.

Well, that's what happens when you release a game outside Japan.

I'd love to know how much it actually sold and what their expectations were. We're obviously not gonna find out, they're far too comfortable sitting on that information for themselves, though.

I'd go out on a limb and guess they might've expected/ needed it to do the "Magical Million", and perhaps it sold something like 1.2 million. This seems exceptionally unlikely however, seeing as I very much doubt an enhanced port became million seller on a system with an install base somewhere between 15 and 20 million units, so... A scenario where they expected to sell 500 000 and got 600-700 000 seems the most likely to me.

Unless there are actually numbers out there and I just made an ass out of myself, that's what Imma guesstimate.

The only issue I have with this prequel is it's going to be weird to have a Rocksteady Batman game without the Joker being voiced by Hamil.

I wouldn't be surprised if they recast everyone, considering how different modern Batman is from Silver Age.

My guess is that "prequel" is the wrong word for this. If it's really Silver Age, I have to think this will be another thing entirely and not actually related to the Arkham games directly. So it's a "prequel" in that it takes place in like the 50s or whatever, but otherwise it's not related to the same storyline.

I'd guess that the tone would be much closer to the old FREEDOM FORCE games. That shows you how long the DCUO game was in production, it was being worked on at the same time as FF2.

I remember a lot of Europeans on forums trying hard to find copies of Tales of the Abyss. They got it 3 months earlier than us, and during the critical holiday season. I'm not surprised at all that it did well there. It's still one of the only RPGs for 3DS.

Personally I enjoy it quite a bit, I haven't finished it because it's really long but it's fun with decent graphics and sound for a handheld. Plot has its ups and downs.

IGN/Gamefront is running a report of a rumor that the board of directors may replace current CEO John Riccitiello with COO Peter Moore after the next earnings call on July 30th. While, I am not sure about Moore being CEO, I think it would be a good move on EA's part. Riccitiello seemed too obsessed with dethroning Activision's CoD and WoW.

Microsoft's Ballmer declares war on Apple
Steve Ballmer, the bullish CEO of Microsoft, has outlined his determination to stop Apple having things its own way in its key markets.

Admitting that Microsoft has “in the past ceded some of the boundary between hardware and software innovation to Apple” the exec would have the world believe that the upcoming Surface tablet represents a changing of the tide.

"We are trying to make absolutely clear we are not going to leave any space uncovered to Apple," he told CRN. "We are not. No space uncovered that is Apple’s.

“We have our advantages in productivity. We have our advantages in terms of enterprise management, manageability. We have got our advantages in terms of when you plug into server infrastructure in the enterprise.

"We are not going to let any piece of this. Not the consumer cloud. Not hardware software innovation. We are not leaving any of that to Apple by itself. Not going to happen. Not on our watch. We’re not going to leave any stone unturned, so to speak, as we pursue that."

It'd purely be a scapegoat move. Moore's high enough up that he agreed with most of the moves Riccitiello has made.

Riccitiello tried turning EA into a publisher of awesome and interesting new games and IPs. That didn't work, so, to please shareholders, he tried relying on sequels and "Let's Copy Activision" with Battlefield and TOR. That is.. well I guess Battlfield has done really well, if not COD well, and I guess TOR has done mediocre (ie not good enough). So now I guess the shareholders and/or board has lost faith. Time to blame him and throw on a new guy!

Oh, sure. EA isn't doing THAT badly; in fact their digital initiative has done pretty darn well. But the negative PR has piled up.

On another topic, the Theatrhythm DLC is rolling out on a steady clip, marking a new chapter for the 3DS. North America's already getting music from other Final Fantasy games, like XIII-2 and even Versus, which still doesn't have anything approaching a release date. Maybe that's a hint that it still exists?

At any rate, a check of the Japanese DLC list shows that even with all the stuff from side and unreleased games and craptons of additional songs for the on-cart games, they've gone out of their way to not release a thing from FF XIV. Wonder why. :P

Some interesting stuff about the 3DS and Wii U from Iwata.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/gaming/satoru-iwata-on-wii-u-i-think-it-will-become-increasingly-difficult-from-now-on-to-compete-over-graphics-7936301.html
First of all to the 3DS XL, we will not be selling this at a loss, we don’t have a huge profit margin on it we intend to sell it a profit. As for Wii U we having even announced price so it’s too early for me to comment.

When we looked at the design of the 3DS XL we had to look at various factors, one was battery life, one was the overall size of the unit, and we had to make some trade-offs. The choice, if we were going to include the second analogue stick, was to reduce the size of the batters or make the unit much bigger.

What we wanted to do was have a bigger screen in comparison with the overall size of the system, so had various discussions and had to make trade-offs and this is the outcome.

Attaching a second analogue stick is possible but it would have made the system even bigger and, though it perhaps puts a burden on people that really want that second stick, it’s a call we had to make and these people will have to live with it.

This [the lack of a second stick] isn’t my main focus when I look at the 3DS XL, it’s one point we had to cover, but for me personally I’m quite happy with the product we’re able to offer.

But I think it’s an important element, it makes graphics more impactful, it proves a sense of immersion that 2D doesn’t have, so I would say generally that 3D is better than 2D. It’s nice to have good graphics but not necessarily on their own, so I don’t think we’ll present [3D graphics] as one of the key features of our consoles but will probably stick with 3D as one of the minor elements of our consoles in the future.

Tales of the Abyss went through a reprinting in both the US and as far as I can tell Europe, but it also must be said that the first print run was tiny.

This won't be the first time though that a Tales game was successful on a Nintendo platform but followed up with less successful games on other systems making it over. Tales of Symphonia lead to the less successful Legendia and Abyss titles on the PS2. ToS2 was followed by the less successful ToV, and ToA was followed by the absolute crater-like impact of Graces F.

Namco being Namco though they'll probably rush over Innocence R now.

Lady British is the new Lord British, because Richard Garriott - I believe - has the rights to the Lord British stuff and EA doesn't feel like going through his hoops to use it, especially with how bitter Garriott's "departure" from EA was.

I actually tweeted this sentiment (pretty much) earlier. It's already pretty far removed from the hallmarks of what the series is known for. It has that smell of "attract the new gaming audience" all around it. Which isn't a bad thing necessarily - it's only a bad thing when established brands get taken down that road.

I don't know. Virtues were always rewards for specific actions, so those bars were there from the beginning. I thought it was weird how in Ultima 7 onwards how those bars weren't there any more and you were almost completely free to do all the unvirtuous stuff again.

... Wait a minute, wasn't this hyped as a 360 exclusive or something way back when? If so, that'd be kind of a dick move on Epic's part
    muahahahahahaha
I wonder if there are any big companies that don't feel the need to shove an old IP onto a new game.
Not really and it's pretty pathetic. All they're doing is ruining these once great IPs and making it so that no one will ever want to buy a game with that name again. XCOM (the one everyone hates) or Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor anyone? It wouldn't be so bad if they were putting out quality games that were legitimately interesting fresh takes on old concepts but they're not. They're actually managing to one up Hollywood in the "who can put out more blatantly cash grabby bullshit" game.
