I'm probably in the minority but I could give two shits about backwards compatibility in the next consoles, I'm not likely to sell my PS3 or 360, it'll move in to the spare room (especially being the PS3 makes a decent bluray player).
I'd be interested to know how much the lacklustre Xbox backwards compatibility is used.
More than nonexistent PS3 backwards compatibility, especially given phones can regularly play PS1 games for free. Having the option there was incredibly crucial in the early days (and to be fair, the PS3 actually had it back then). Taking it away because, hey, you can? Not great from a consumer standpoint. Especially when your coinciding marketing campaign is "It only does everything*."
They'll probably just come out and say, "Nope, not happening," and save themselves some of the headache.
*Everything being less than it used to do.
Except every PS3 can play PS1 games.

It seems to me that most of Zynga's success is because they were one of the first companies to make games on facebook, and so had a good amount of time when there wasn't very much competition, or if there was they just bought it up. But now larger more established game companies are starting to work on Social games, that are much better than anything Zynga produces. But all Zynga keeps spitting out it re-skinned clones of their own older games, and copies of other companies things, they don't inovate at all, and seem to still be working like they're the only ones making social games.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the company fold in a year, and everyone who has any skill at all in the field has already jumped ship to other companies.
The other factor is that they used their early successful games to pump players over to their new games. Their entire strategy depends on them being the dominant player on Facebook,

If they want digital sales to continue being a thing, I can't see them ditching backward compatibility entirely.
Sony is probably in the worst position here because of the funky architecture of their console, but I imagine the first big generational shift that basically denies customers their digital purchases could end up being a "big deal"

Can I point out how disingenuous the argument of "You can play your PS1 games on the PS3" is when it comes to backwards compatibility discussion of the PS3? Yes, you are correct in some small portion, but unfortunately the grand-slam success console, PS2, has its entire library left out of that goddamn loop and it's no less relevant to what BC means in the first place (hell, it's probably more relevant since BC generally means "previous console's games" in a lot of people's heads, a legit point of view). The PS1 library being accessible does not excuse the mess surrounding PS2 games being playable. Cool, people can play Final Fantasy Tactics or Castlevania: SotN or whatever the hell else. But guess what? They can't play Disgaea, MGS2, etc etc.

Apologies, I'm a little sleep deprived. But it is still something I see touted once in a great while on the point I was needlessly addressing.
Hahaha... it should be Sami fist-bumping Eagle there though. Earth and Sky let me steamroll the end of the campaign. (Move transport helo, activate Earth and Sky, move helo again, unload infantry, tag to Sami and instacap the HQ. 17-square radius instant-win.)
Microsoft will be throwing an industry mixer for the 50-ish percent of OnLive workers affected by the streaming company's recent restructuring madness this Monday, August 27, at its campus in Silicon Valley. Hiring managers will be on site, scouting for Xbox-oriented positions at Microsoft's offices in Mountain View, CA and Redmond, WA.
"We are eager to speak to individuals and teams affected by the OnLive transition," reads the event's public invitation. "We are looking to add key players who want to make a real impact in creating groundbreaking new products and services."
Whether this is indicative of an expanded steaming presence in Microsoft's future is anyone's guess; it could simply be an example of the tech industry taking care of its own. An Xbox Kinect bundle will also be raffled off during the event, though we assume those attending will be more interested in finding gainful employment than winning a door prize.

It'll be interesting to see how a game close to "full price" does.
Well, it's an inferior downgraded port that strips away at least half of the combat system of the original for... the same price you can buy the original.
PS2 in its first 4 weeks sold more software than Vita in its first 8 months
GBA in its first 2 weeks sold 85% of software Vita sold its first 7 months
GCN in its first 7 months sold 2,5 times more software than Vita for the same period
XBX in its first 8 months sold 50% of software Vita sold at the same period
After 7 months in 2012 3DS has sold more software than the entire 2011
3DS is the top software seller this year with more than 30% share, Vita less than 5%, 360 has half software sales of Vita
Wii had two releases in the first half of 2012, Kiki Trick and Mario Party 9. Wii Software sales? 2.5 times Vita.
NDS has sold more software than PSP this year (Pokémon B2/W2 accounts for most of this)
PS3 2012 first half is in line with 2011. PSP is waaay down.

I'm noticing a trend, Henroid, of the industry as a whole moving towards helping others who are getting screwed over by poor management or bad fortunes. Maybe it's just the companies in question being mercenary and going for talent... But I would like to think that the industry is starting to learn that while the talent pool is currently limitless (see: Trenches), there is actual value in being kind to others who are going through the same rough crap the rest of the industry is.
Hell, if anything, that kind of camaraderie and mutual respect/support might lead to advances in quality of living for the industry. Who knows.

Which is less special because of the aforementioned--namely, PS1 emulation (I guess I wasn't clear enough). I'm the only person I know who uses their PS3 to play PS1 CD games.
I've used my PS3 to play PS2 games, but I was one of those people who managed to get a system that actually was able to do that before Sony completely stopped doing that.
I've heard this mentioned before, and I agree: given the ugliness of low-poly characters/worlds and the fact that everyone was still wrestling with 3D controls and camera at the time, it's hard to really be nostalgic about too many games in the N64/PSOne era.
At any rate, Lollipop Chainsaw seems to be a modest success:
Lollipop Chainsaw shipped over 700,000 units worldwide, making it the most shipped game in Grasshopper Manafacture's history. Grasshopper CEO Suda 51 and Japanese publisher Kadokawa Games proudly announced the figure at the game's 'Summer Appreciation Event' in Tokyo. The news comes a year after Shadows of the Damned only sold 24,000 units in its first week of US retail, so success for Grasshopper's major release of 2012 must come as welcome relief.
Suda 51 also used the event to show off a new trailer for Killer is Dead, the studio's latest work in progress, which apparently will star a katana-wielding cyborg. That's something to look forward to when the game releases on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next year.

Did not sell 2 million copies on opening weekend. Critical failure. Gut the entire company for a short term revenue bump and go back to making another game in the Lego franchise.

To be fair, studios that are ended like this probably have a much bigger budget behind them compared to Grasshopper. Not that it isn't any stupid though.
I know we harp on this, but I can't imagine the budget of the goddamn South Park game would be so enormous to require a two million sales threshold to make a profit. Maybe THQ plans on taking out a bunch of Super Bowl ads or something?
Why the crap did I ever make my original name "cloudeagle?"

PS1 BC is simply not equivalent to PS2 BC. Especially when you consider the time period the later was dropped.
The fact that phones and even something like the Amazon Kindle Fire can be an easy PS1 emulator emphasizes that. Could Sony do worse? Yes, they could have gotten rid of the less important BC feature, along with the more important one. It doesn't change the fact that they dropped the more important BC feature.
I have a software BC PS3....I'm lucky, for now.

Yeah.
700,000 for a Grasshopper game is a damn near breakaway success for them.
Here's a little something interesting. Though Angry Birds games still rank high in the game sales chart, the highest-grossing game only hit number 52 in the highest-grossing chart.
This article uses this to argue that free-to-play generates a cubic fuckton more money than raw game sales:
Lollipop Chainsaw is the best selling game Grasshopper Manufacture has ever had by a landslide. That's a huge success for them.
Amazing what a decent publisher and actually advertising the damn thing in the first place does.

I was surprised to see how easy it was to implement advertising into small smart phone games a few yeas back.
I'm sure there are some pay-for games on the Apple store that still include advertising--truly the final frontier.
