You know one thing I've been wondering is if they're going to start having a second EVO or something. Like EVO east or the like.
This tourney was delayed multiple times due to fire hazards and I only see it getting bigger.
East coast already has multiple substantial tournaments that draw national and international players. Evo draws huge because they positioned themselves as national finals. You can't really split it up; it's not a web comic convention. You can't really demote Evo to equal among multiple bowls and have anyone be satisfied with the outcome. If the scene keeps expanding, I think the most logical choice would be to require at least one seed point for registration.
But that's Evo's whole shtick. Show up, no matter who you are or where you come from, and if you're good enough, you can win. No bullshit or exceptions. Literally anyone is in the position to knock out someone like Daigo or Justin Wong.
The only thing current seeding points gets you is spreading out placement in the bracket. You still have to go through the same number of players as anyone else.
Like, how many international players would have absolutely no chance to gain evo seed points? And Evo's got its own tournament format standards, for good reason, so just throwing seed points at tournies in other countries that don't meet the standard seems like a poor to me. I mean, did either of the SF4 grand finalists have any seed points? For KoF i think Bala probably did, but his opponent from Korea?
's an interesting puzzle though, for sure.
This is an excellent post, however, all of the local majors offer the same thing. Anyone can walk up, pay their money and take their chances. Turning EVO into an actual championship instead of a collection of champions may not be a bad idea.
That could turn in into more of a convention than a tournament, though, and there is already a lot of spotlight grabbing by the sponsors.

While I like the open format of majors in America, I just don't think it's going to be tenable if the scene continues to grow at this rate. It'll take 4 hotels and an entire week by 2016. I think if they went to a point required format for just this final tournament, it'd still be okay, particularly if the seed points were distributed in such a way that you're still bringing in thousands of competitors, and not just the usual top 64. I think if they were to go to that format, they would also make more of an effort to weight points base on formats of other majors and large weeklies like WNF and organize more international qualifiers. Final Round already runs qualifiers that fly in winners from other parts of the US and east Asia.

Yeah, they mentioned that on stream a couple of times. One dude from the Philippines won a foreign Road to Evo. tourney and got in.
As for East Coast Evo? Evo just happens to be the biggest name on the block, you can't really overnight Evo. You gotta build up on that reputation. CEO, Tipped Off, Final Fight, these are all fairly big tournies (though tipped off is smash) on the East Coast.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Entry is not the problem. Most of the people at evo didn't even enter.
If only paid entrants were around, everything would have still been hype and busy, but there wouldn't be the choking mass of people
Everyone will hate this, but only let paid competetitors on the floor
I don't think entry is the problem right now. I think it has the potential to be down the road. I suspect limiting spectators or removing them altogether might ultimately boost shirt monstering, which has to be a headache for pool running.

Kof pools seemed full, none of the pools around mine had dqs. Shirt monsters played for the most part.
Sfxt, however, that shit was empty as hell. We had 3 byes in our pool and you heard dqs being yelled constantly
Both fighting games I'd like to play (MK9 for the single player, SF4 for the fightin') are a full 30 bucks. Not surprising, really, and actually a good price, but still too rich for my blood. Ah well.

Liked the idea of owning a rare tshirt more than the actual designs anyway

Man big tournies have a door fee that is separate from the entry fee.
Does Evo not do this?
