Did I dream up this game?

Okay, so I have this memory of this game... I've had the memory since I was in elementary school. But I'm not quite sure if it's real or not.

What I remember of it is...

-it was a SNES game, a sidescroller with a guy that used a sword. I remember the guy with reddish hair, and big blue metal leggings for pants.
-Among other things, you collected various types of armor, which would change the color of your pants when worn. You started out with blue pants, you could get other colors such as red, white, and yellow. White would slow down time, yellow would make you invincible or something. When wearing the special colored armor, you had a magic bar or something that steadily went down. I remember to beat the final level or boss or something you had to manage the time you spent in the yellow pants well.
-I remember early on in the game, you had to collect an Herb. There was also a point in the game where you got chain mail armor. I know this isn't much, but hey.

So... does anyone remember anything remotely similar to this? It's always been something nagging me in the back of my mind, wondering if the game was real or not. I remember having a lot of fun with it, but since my brothers rented it I never got to play it much. If it is indeed real, I want to see how it lives up to today's standards... but I honestly don't know if I imagined this or not.

Were the pants yellow before you fought the final boss? Were there any brown pants?

How beautifully po-mo, dreaming about a game that is about dreaming itself.

Is it Ys III? Other than the description of equipping pants for gameplay, the details you give can be almost any RPG out there.

Except that it was a sidescroller.

Edit: Oops, it is a sidescroller, but your picture doesn't load.

Ys III was the best because in this one area, you can get infinitely respawning birds. So tape down ATTACK, walk away, and come back to a guy leveled well past a normal run of the game would get you.

    ...pants?

I'm probably going to feel pretty guilty when someone comes up with the title, but this really doesn't sound like anything I've ever heard of or seen. Like, nothing.

Maybe I should do a Google search for Red the Swordsman's Magical Pants Adventures.

    With pants we will win!

I seem to remember an older thread about this. I can't remember if we found it or not.

That's Ys III, and it does seem very close. Red hair and blue metal pants/boots. You could equip rings that drained a power meter as you kept them equipped. It came out here on SNES.

I'm pretty sure we've nailed it as Y's III, so yes, it does exist.

Ys III... huh. Yeah, that does look exactly like what I remember. Man that's so cool. I've gone through like a decade of my life wondering if that game was actually real or not, and now I know it is! Thanks guys. I'll see if I can find it somewhere... I want to see if it's as good as I remember it being. :)

It looks to be $10 or less on eBay. I know my friend has it in his collection.

Yeah, Ys III. Granted you didn't change pants color, but when you equiped different rings that granted different abilitys, it would change the color of your armor while it was active.

Pretty hard game, but pretty fun too.
