Knights of the Force - Jedi Academy TC (NSF56k)

I just stumbled on this today somewhere else... and it looks awesome. It's a multi and single-player total conversion for Jedi Academy, adding new maps, characters, sabers, and vehicles from Episodes 1-6. From the site:
A bar that allows the player to change the game speed and an improved special menu has been added to change the camera angles as desired. Also added an option to enable health bars. By turning this option on you can see health bars above enemies' heads. Realistic dismember option added for lightsabers and sharp-edged weapons. Also added a "Realistic Lightsaber" option that makes the game more enjoyable and realistic. When you turn on this option, Lightsaber acts like in the movies and is effective when touching and object or enemy even if the player hasn't attacked. Gamorrean, Tusken, Weequay, Gran and such characters' weapons causes the player to bleed (spear, tusken staff, mace, axe). This option can be turned of from the KotF's CD menu. New weapons and their wielders were added such as Weequays with shield and torch, Destroyer Droideka, Super Battledroid and 4 armed General Grievous. These characters have been refitted for singleplayer.

There is a trailer up, as well... youtube version on the site, or huge download versions.

I'm downloading the demo now.. wanted to let my fellow Star Wars dorks know about it.

A full version of a fan mod delayed (and delayed and delayed and eventually never released because you so know that is going to happen here)?

    Never.

You think I'd be less cynical on a Sunday.

Note that the original game is pretty terrible. So be sure to get a deal.

True. And it's awesome how he says nothing about it being delayed, but has no problem using broken English to declare how hard it is to make the mod and how he's alone in creating this giant project and blah blah blah fuck you gimme the mod.

It's funny because, judging by all the videos he's posted, it seems like it's in some state of completion. Ah well.

It has some nifty setups, like speeder bike stuff and a moving train level. If you can find it cheap, go for it.

I'd say Academy is worth it for. You get to customize your character a bit, but the fun part is using dual sabres or a sabre staff.

It's harder to get dismemberment to work, but well worth it.

The story is indeed shit. But hey, I can overlook that for some *vromm, vroom* swish dead stormtooper action.

Its the same as the old forum.
Choosing light vs dark was really lame though. IIRC there was a warehouse battle with one choice, and then 15 minutes of game play after that which was for the most part identical, except if you were evil you killed Jedi and if you were good you killed those retarded Jedi wanabe goons

I just meant that you get to kill that irritating guy and then your character fights Kyle Katarn and takes over a Star Destroyer.
    I thought that was nice.

My favorie part of Outcast was getting Force Jump III, leaping up like fifty feet in the air, then using Force Pull III to launch storm troopers on the ground into orbit. The best part is that you could do all that with your lightsaber out, blocking all incoming fire.

That was the train level, right? I started speccing my character to have Choke 3 before I got to that level just so I could drop everyone off the edge of the train.

Academy is a few years old by now, and wasn't that intensive for its time - depends on your comp, but you might be able to run it.

Unless you mean you no longer have a comp.

I played jed knight so much that the shortcuts I made for force powers, q, r, t, f, v,z,x,b,g have become instinctive. It's no stretch at all to hit t if i need the power, or g, while jumping around in combat like a rabbit on crack. I generally stick similar powers to the old force power buttons I used too. Eg, f was heal, so a heal skill goes there. G was forcespeed, so a sprint or speedup power will go there. r was lightning, so the best attack skill goes there. X was force grip. I had the push and pull powers on my mouse, but when I played occasionaly on computesr without one, v and b were those skills.
Man, so many good times with outcast. I played it more than academy.
I played academy a shitton, and it was a blast, but after a while the lack of reliable dismemberment and the increased randomness of the lightsaber combat engine made me lose interest.
I hated dual sabers, if you played like me at full lightsaber damage, running in with dual sabers got you killed instantly. So slow.
Only staff and single saber had the control and defense needed to face another lightsaber opponent and not die in the first attack.

Playing the game normally dual was fine, of course.

But theres nothing like facing off against a lightsaber opponent and knowing if you fuck up, you die instantly. Made the fights intense, so you would actually back off and wait for the computer to make a mistake, and have little standoffs and shit. So theatrical.

I play Academy every now and then, but whenever I enter a level, I turn on cheats and enter the following commands...

    playermodel Desann
    playerteam free
    npc spawn luke
    npc spawn kyle
    npc spawn tavion
    npc spawn alora
    npc spawn jedi
    npc spawn reborn

...and so on. You can also add in multiple rancors and wampas using the same commands. It's a lot of fun, but bewarned... Kyle is a bitch.

I tried the demo of the mod and it seems unreasonably unfair... neither I nor any of my friends can complete it properly, no matter whether we choose Obi-Wan or Jango.

Objectively speaking, I found Jedi Academy to have some fucking amazing levels and improved gameplay over Jedi Outcast. The story was pretty lame, and a number of levels sucked, but after "tier 1" the game kept getting better and better. The tier 2 and 3 finales were better than many things in JK2, and and in between there were some jaw-dropping levels. (Chandrilla comes to mind.) I found that it was well worth the $20 I spent on it.

So in summary, don't knock it - it wasn't a bad game, and in a lot of ways the customization elements offset the bad parts.

Yeah it sucks, but it's the only mod I ever made.

Anyway, this one looks fun, but what I'm really waiting for is the Dark Forces TC that will never actually be finished. (If only, if only...)

Also, Jedi Knight was great because it didn't have a bunch of throw away "dark jedi" like the later games. The Dark Jedi we tough and worth the fight, not stormtroopers with lightsabers.
