Today marks the 43rd anniversary of the first moon landing. One of the most momentous occasions in human history.
So, you know, when you're thinking about all the horrible things going on today, maybe remember that we're also capable of great achievements. Or used to be, at any rate!
didn't nasa lose the plans to the space shuttle some time after they were taken out of active service during a spring cleaning event
i distinctly recall a famous science guy saying this
Common misconception. NASA has them stored on microfilm. Copies of the blueprints to the Saturn V exist in the National Archives and I think the Smithsonian has a copy too.
The tools and assembly line for the Saturn were destroyed, and many 1960's parts just aren't made any more, so it's no longer possible to build a Saturn V, and more economic just to design again from scratch, with modern techniques like CAD and improved understanding of rocket design building a vastly improved rocket system.
"But sir, Area 51 is where we're faking the moon landing!"
"Then we'll have to really land on the moon! Invent NASA and tell them to get off their fannies!"
I cannot help but laugh every time I hear that punch land.

i am incapable of having even the barest shred of respect for people who believe the moon landing was faked. like, Nelson Mandella could walk up to me, and tell me that the moon landing was faked and you can tell because of the flag and the wharghlebarghle, and I would laugh in his face.

There have been worse people to walk this earth but I don't think any person has ever earned a punch in the mouth more than that guy.
this will forever be the best wondermark
And really nobody is more entitled to sock another dude in the jaw than somebody who walked on the fucking moon
