I just went from a friendly discussion about the Olympics with my dad to 'all Olympians will eventually use drugs to keep the games exciting' to 'Maybe Usain Bolt is conspiring with bookies' to 'You can't prove that air exists'.
Somebody comfort me.
Our local radio station had a drive segment about a week ago with a guest presenter basically telling everybody exactly this. Ugghhh.
I told him that it sounded like a cheesy B-grade action movie.

At that point in the conversation he was trying to make a point in the heat of the moment, he was just too stubborn to admit that it wasn't a good one.
Again, good dad, just cynical and stubborn sometimes.
I hate how cynical some people are about elite sport.
And these cynics are generally people who do not understand sport or have never achieved anything remotely close to elite in any sport.
I had a friend who declared all professional wrestlers and anyone who looks like them to be steroid users and wife beaters.
I tried to explain "No, some people have an honest love of gettin real big"
He said "Anyone who gets that big earns millions of dollars playing football, none of them would be a wrestler"
"How much does john cena make a year dude? not only that but what if they don't like football"
He just kept digging the hole, and he would. not. stop. smarmier, more presumptuous, more and more irrelevant as it went on, and he does it with every single argument. To some it up he says "Regardless of that..." every second sentence. Me and another friend said that all that means is "Ignoring your point entirely...". The fucker keeps arguing, on and on.
I don't understand the point of taking drugs in sports. I mean we all know winners don't take drugs so right there you are eliminating any chance of success!

He failed miserably in the gym
Yeah I was gonna say, it just sounds like he is trying to justify his own physical failings rather than have an actual discussion.
@vivixenne Just got home from seeing Dark Knight Rises
That music.
I KNOW RIGHT
I'm trying to decide between typing up what I thought of the movie for you or just doing it in person next time there's a meetup (which we should do soon, or something!)
To be fair, lots of those wrestlers are taking/have taken performance enhancing drugs of some description. Generally speaking, you don't get that huge just from sheer love and dedication for getting big. Obviously some dudes are naturally bigger than others etc etc.
That doesn't stop many of them from being upstanding dudes and I respect their decisions, their work and their dedication regardless. Calling them wifebeaters is silly.
Well maybe if you lived over here and hung out with the cool folks in Perth you could hear it in person too, Gatsby!
....
Dark Knight Rises spoilers!
Okay so I was pretty damn impressive with the whole major cast. The return cast were just as good as they have been previously (<3 Alfred). Hathaway was sublime- Viv that scene you mentioned where she just changes from Selina to catwoman was as impressive as you made it sound like it would be. I was even surprisingly impressed with the kid (Blake wasn't it? The obvious future Robin). I will admit that Bane's voice was a bit... Too jovial at times, but there was a few moments where that effect worked in their favour as it just added to the chilling vibe he gave off all the time. But Hardy's movements were pretty incredible, his posture, stance, the way he moved his hands around really added to the character.
Yeah the musical score was pretty rad. Perhaps I was paying extra attention to it because of what Viv said about it on friday, but I think I would have picked up on it regardless. The melding of the batman theme and that chant was quite remarkable.
The whole rising motif was super clever and shored up the narrative quite nicely. I didn't have any major problems with the story overall, but I've heard some other people complain about it not making sense. Personally I think the only bits that could bother me would be Bane and Talia's motives and goals being a little flimsy when in a vacuum, but considering everything from the first two movies (Begins in particular, of course) I'd say there's a lot of context there that brings it all together. I saw the ending coming (why else would they mention the autopilot when you first see the batship?), but I was actually surprised by Talia's identity. It did make sense though, since they put a lot of emphasis on the protector of the boy in the pit.
uhhh that'll do for now I guess. Overall it was a great film. I find it difficult to rank the three of them compared to each other, because honestly they're all pretty different films and I like them each for their own reasons.

That's kind of where I settled, I changed the direction of the argument but only insofar as to make the point that people can and do build naturally, and you shouldn't talk shit about every muscled dude who pops up on TV as only being a muscle mass success because of steroids.
My old housemate was of the opinion that they just make doping legal cause he feels as if that's the next step in professional sports and if everyone can do it it'll make for more interesting events.

Bloody stupid line of thinking that misses the point of sport

This is a dumb argument as well.
Doping was legal until the sixties, and they removed it due to the severe health risks involved with it.

yeh I tried to be on the side of, well if it's legal then people are going to try all kinds of shit and probably end up killing themselves

Oh my god one of my disolvable stitches just came out THIS IS HEAVEN
Legalising drugs seems pretty silly, but it's going to be pretty interesting to see what happens to the Olympics once artificial limbs surpass the real thing.
I remember reading somewhere that people were arguing that people with prosthetics are at an advantage to people without and they shouldn't be allowed compete.

What about stuff like those full-body streamlined swimsuits?
Welp, it just hit me. My 10 year old nephew is leaving to go back to his home in Thailand on Tuesday, and I'm probably not going to see him again for some tremendous period of time.
Chances of me being emotionally shaky tomorrow are high.

Aww Julian.
On the upside it should be good for him to be with his mother as opposed to your brother.

I believe those are regulated now? Like you're only allowed certain lengths

Plus I'm sure you can xbox live him.
Ehh, his mum ain't the best but his grandparents seem nice and he likes them, so at least he'll be with them.
And Thailand unfortunately has no Microsoft/Xbox Live support, I'll be keeping his 360 and HDD safe from my brother here, but I've taught him how to use email and he might start using Steam.
