Finding a web host for someone who has zero experience with web hosting?

Hey forumers,

I'd like to get into indie game dev as a hobby. I've been thinking about finding a host for my dev blog and the projects I end up with. I don't need anything fancy. But in doing research, I see recommendations and requests for info regarding SSH, Java, Django, PHP, VPS, shared hosting and a lot of other jargon. I don't know any Java. I know what some of the rest are, but I don't know anything about them.

All I know is C++, some HTML from years ago and bits and pieces of a semester of Linux. I've never used a web host. I don't know what to expect other than I can upload what I need to a server that isn't mine and have a domain to call my own.

So.. I don't even know what questions to ask you guys here, but I'll try a few:

What are some decent web hosts in the US for under $10 a month?
What are some things I should definitely look for in a web host?
What are some things I should definitely avoid? I've heard "UNLIMITEDS!" basically indicate a host could be prone to spreading their resources too thin...
Does anyone know of a beginner's guide to using a web host? Does anyone have pointers/tips/do's and don'ts?

Little help? I'd appreciate it mucho.
