So, I'm a Mac user, but my parents use a hand-me-down Dell desktop from '03. When my sister purchased a Macbook Pro last year she gave her old desktop to my parents to use for the few things they use it for. I wiped the HD using the included Dell software discs, and reinstalled XP Home with the supplied CD from Dell. All went well for a few months but now Windows is claiming that this copy of Windows isn't genuine. The hell. This is a Dell-supplied CD that's not legit. Why is it saying that my copy of Windows isn't valid?
On top of that, it tells me to look in Accessories > System Tools for the "Activate Windows" application, but no such thing exists.
don't you just have to call them and clear that up for it to work?
i've had to "manually" activate machines after changing them too much or wiping them for the 3rd or so time. i just called, typed in my numbers and was done.

It just means there is a problem in the system somewhere.
I had a near catastrophic failure a bit ago with a ram-disk setting[it was starting up and trying to run windows on the virtual ram-disk which it should not have been doing, especialy since there wasnt enough ram to load windows like that]. And it kept telling me that my windows wasnt Genuine until i fixed the problem.

*sigh*. A simple call to Dell or Microsoft will clear this up just fine. It happens sometimes with OEM licenses, no big deal.
Happened to a Dell laptop I bought in, hmm, 2002. It just took a call to Microsoft's support line, the lady on the phone gave me a working activation code without asking any questions at all.
