Trying to figure out how a retractable pull out screen (like a banner stand) works.
Today at work, I accidentally disassembled a banner stand. Oops! As I was fixing it, I got really curious about how it actually works.
For those not familiar, a banner stand is basically a pull down projection screen most class rooms have, but upside down. The theory is the same, I think.
Anyway, the I know (from experience today) that in order to build the tension needed, you can manually crank the rod running through the roll that the banner or screen attaches to. That's all well and good, but rod has a mechanism itself that, while I'm use it utilizes springs, I can't work out how. My googling attempts have been futile. Everyone just wants to sell me the damn things and not give me a diagram of how it works :-p
Any help is appreciated!
Oh, a video showing what I'm talking about (but nothing about how it actually works, sadly):
