Motherboard upgrade question

I know, I know, lrn2google...but I've gotten contradictory information, so I come to you...

I'm a giant dope. I have a Compaq Presario (specifically SR1120NX, if that matters). When I bought it, I didn't think to check on card slots; it only has a PCI, and I want to upgrade so that I can actually, you know, play games. Oddly enough my Radeon 9200 ain't cutting it anymore.

Like I said, a dope.

Anyway, here's my question...I'm lead to the conclusion that the Windows copy I have is proprietary or whatever, and that if I replace the motherboard I'll have to replace Windows as well. It was the counter jockey at CompUSA who first told me that, and I figured he was just trying to sell more stuff, but as I've searched around I've found people who say it's true and those who say it's a load of hooey.

If I do have to replace Windows, I might as well just buy a new computer altogether, which I'd prefer not to do.

So, my question is this: does Compaq use a proprietary Windows version that will only work with the original motherboard? Thanks for any information.

Im pretty sure I have seen it where compaq does indeed have the proprietary windows you speak of, I am not 100% on it though.
