The "I'm not dumb" was the end of a series of tweets. It was like "[Talk about how cool the new features are], but I'm not dumb. I know you were expecting something more."
However, they were expecting something more because he teased at something more!
So, how the hell are they going to do the Tigris Cantus fight?
Or Anguis Cantus?

Or Vesperillo Canor?
Or Uzuki + Kariya?
Ok, the twitter sting-along was bullshit, no doubt about that.
I'm failing to see the horrible though. TWEWY re-release, for 20 bucks, on a device that can actually support its gameplay almost perfectly, with a modified battle system because, as unique as the dual screen setup was, I'm going to be the one who comes out and says that it was ultimately stupid and annoying and I'm glad they're changing it.
Sounds like pretty cool news all around to me.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
I thought the dual screen setup was a real wild ride, once you got a handle on it.
The idea of a port on 1 screen sounds kinda weird. Like I said above, there are a number of bosses that kind of rely on the dualscreen setup. I still don't know what the hell they've done with Tigris Cantus.
My problem with it was that it expected you to play two different battle systems on two different screens at the same time. Which is impossible. There were certainly ways around it, like either button mashing the top while you dealt with Neku, or swiping like crazy on the bottom while you dealt with the partner. Or just putting it on auto and hope the computer did well enough (read: adequate for random battles, and "what's a block button?" for boss fights). And you can't tell me that they didn't expect you to play both simultaneously when the partner systems kept getting more and more involved and complex.
It's why I didn't do much of the postgame fights. I can't play two games at once, where it's game over if I lose one of them.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
Plenty of people can, though. The "you just aren't good enough" defense isn't normally applicable... but I never had the problems you're talking about. Sure, it was harder than one screen, but I beat the bonus boss on ultimate at level 1; I think I can safely say that it wasn't impossible to handle two systems at once.
The Duel Battle system was awesome! The AI control was great for learning it. And you can play Neku on the bottom how ever you want. Loved it. Not sure how well it will translate to iOS, but will remain hopeful. Story was pretty cool too.
I might buy one of the new copies of the DS version. I got my current copy used, and it'd be nice to have a copy on which I could start a new game/introduce a friend to the game whenever I wanted, without agonizing about losing ALL THESE PINS that I've sunk my time into. Also, I think that the DS version deserves my money, but I don't really know if I want to support the iOS version. Voting with dollars, as they say.
And yeah, I loved being able to do whatever the hell I wanted with Neku's deck. One of my decks is pretty much nothing but Apport pins, boosted with Over The Top to create an endless rain of stone. I also have Summon You Know Who/Fresh Line as a puck passer.
It would be one thing if they designed it to jump back and forth. Like it kinda already does with the puck system.
But nope. You need to quickly navigate the wall of fireballs on the bottom screen at the same time you're blocking and jumping attacks on the top. While also playing 3 card Monte/Higher or lower/Match the pairs for the link system. I can't do both at the same time.
Don't get me completely wrong, it was a fabulously fresh experiment. And with tweaking, could have been great, which I hope they do if they do a sequel.

If nothing else, just following the "puck" works perfectly fine.
Admittedly, I sort of stopped focusing on attempting to get fusion stars, and just focused on mashing attack and occasionally blocking on the top screen. I think I was biased towards focusing on Neku. Thankfully, if you need to, you can just continually dash around as Neku to protect him.

Pretty sure that, basically, you weren't good enough. They didn't design an RPG that was easy to just crank up to the highest difficulty and click on Ultima to get through.

I disagree.
And for the record, most of the game was perfectly serviceable. Most of the random fights (except those giant turtles? I don't remember exactly, I just know they were giant and did this bullshit shockwave attack) and the story bosses. I did beat the game well enough. It was when the game opened full up and said "Ok this is what you gotta do" where I ejected the card and shelved it.

You don't need to do both at the same time; in fact, the game trained you how to play it properly with the taboo noise - you could only damage them with the character who had the light puck. If you couldn't manage the top screen effectively then you could gear up with defensive threads for that character and have Neku do most of the heavy lifting as well. Now, I'm not saying the game was easy though...
"Uzuki, how about that ramen?"
"I smell a promotion!"

Your argument is literally "I had trouble with the game when the fights got hard, so the system itself is inherently an awful idea." The fact is that at least a significant amount of the complaints you've made against the system revolve solely around your difficulty with it (a difficulty I did not share to such a large extent) doesn't really make me think your dislike of the dual screen system is due to anything besides the fact it was hard for you.
And yeah, the game is harder after you beat it. They give you a new difficulty and bonus bosses and you can go fight battles you lose in the storyline and win. It's supposed to be hard if you crank it up. The fact the hard difficulties are hard to win isn't really anything against the game's design.
In the meantime, I've grabbed the game off the shelf to give myself a refresher.
It's been a long time, so I've forgotten where I am, but my current save is next to one of the story fights you're able to replay at the end.
It's Neku and Beat vs Shiki and... whoever that guy in the shades was. I think he was the head honcho for most of the game?
I can't really take my eyes off the bottom of the screen, because he's shooting fireballs all over the place and doing this beam line attack thing. At the same time, I can't really take my eyes off the top screen, because if I don't, the AI is too stupid to block, and before I know it he's pissed away his entire life bar.
Half of this is me clearly being completely rusty on the combat system. Still kinda reaffirms my point that the game wants me to play both of these screens at the same time, and my brain physically cannot. Hence it's not worth the headache.

You got enough heal pins? You eaten food that boosts your hp/defence? You got enough Brave for the good threads? (Beat has the lowest bravery of all the teammates and his gear is generally attack focused). You using Lightning Rook? You got a teleport/charge pin for Neku? You taking the "Retry on Easy" option?

That boss is easy to permastunlock though, using the ice knockup, the bullets that knock up, and the ice thing you get early on. That's actually the key to a lot of fights.
Then you were really good at the game, congratulations. The boss in question was never an issue for me since I figured out how to stunlock early on in the game, but several of the postgame bosses on high difficulty are straight up brutal.
And most of the time I barely looked at the upper screen, just spammed and blocked if I glanced and saw a big attack coming. On taboo style stuff I just looked where the puck was, and dashed randomly with neku whenever I wasn't looking at him, as the dash makes you invulnerable.
That boss is the one that gives you Lightning Rook, Shen.
He says its replayable, I figured it was Another Day/postgame stuff :P
At any rate, pin and thread setups are so important and jumping right into one of the last bosses probably isn't the best way to get your bearings back.
The hard fights were fun. Except the bullshit pink elephants. But then I became able to fuck 'em right up, and that was fun. I don't remember my decks so well. Maybe I should have a look one of these days. Pretty sure I tended to keep something AoE-slashy around.

If I recall correctly I had it set up such that Neku could almost constantly just chain slashing motion attacks together, which mitigated a lot of the need for serious caution or precision for when I needed to do things on the top screen; I'd just start slashing at the bottom screen while looking at the top screen. I haven't played in forever, but I don't believe this actually stopped a lot of bosses from attacking, though it did lead to incredibly rapid clears of most normal noise.

See, half of your suggestions read to me as "You're basically going to get fucked up on the screen you're not paying attention to, so just have enough health/defense to deal with it". Which I find to be somewhat of a copout. If I'm dealing with Neku, Beat gets smacked, and if I deal with Beat, Neku gets smacked. And I can totally handle the stylus dance to fight with Neku, I just can't pay attention to the top screen with any clarity at the same time. Or vice versa.
That's kind of the point I'm trying to make. If I play Neku, I can't really do much with the partner other than mash the dpad and hope for the best, and if I play the partner, I can't do much with Neku other than drag him around and hope for the best. And for most of the game, that works out absolutely fine. Random battles are easy enough, and a few bosses do employ a rudimentary switching mechanic where they ease off on one screen. It's just the fights that require you to metaphorically pat your head while you rub your belly that I literally cannot process. I got through most of them, but it always felt like I was cheesing my way through them, either by loading Neku up with pins that have a lot of invincibility frames, or... well potential character spoilers, so better safe than sorry:
Throwing Joshua in the air and spamming his beam attack
At the end of the day though: Loved the game. Loved the story. Loved the music. Loved the gameplay involving the pins and the touchscreen (after I got used to it at least). Loved the concept of the dual battle system. But didn't like the actual implementation of it.

I suggested what I did precisely because you said you had trouble managing both screens :P It's something people take to differently; no one's blaming you for finding it hard, just criticising your "It's impossible" because, well, it isn't.

I didn't mean any offense by it. :P But like I said, it seems cheesy to me, like I'm bypassing the intended nature of the system.
Either way, you liked it and could handle it. My fragile little mind couldn't. Agree to disagree and all that.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
Yeah, I'm in the camp of "loved the game, fuck the switching, mash top screen 4 lyfe". Actually paying attention to the top screen resulted in a dead Neku pretty fast; you can't deal with positional attacks if you're not looking at the screen.
I am really pleased that SE is still interested in the IP but, after four years of nothing, you do not announce a port via a week-long countdown. The expectation is a sequel, especially after the cameos in Kingdom Hearts Pretentious Title. Their PR department needs a stern lecture followed by a time-out or something. This could have been a pleasant surprise, but it is instead a massive letdown.
Would be nice if they didn't just stop with a iOS port. If they're going to be re-designing it for a single-screen audience, what about a Vita version? Big touch screen *plus* actual buttons to work with.
Still will probably end up getting it regardless, since I feel like replaying it and can't find the original cartridge anywhere.
