There's a new PSP in town...

Well, I'm glad I waited...

From Kotaku.com

There have been rumors ever since the DS Lite hit that Sony was also planning a redesign of its portable. Some of those rumors have ground in reality, some of them are just wishful thinking. Nothing official has been announced, and Sony has shot down any chatter regarding a redesign saying it's not happening. With all this, PSP2 looks to be a pipe-dream — Like it's not happening.

Apparently, it is.

Various third party and highly placed sources state that the PSP2 is coming. Speculation is swirling around the industry, and third party publishers are hoping to tie their games to the PSP2 launch. Thing is, Sony has yet to pass along any information about when that will be. Meaning we won't see big third party titles at launch.

Word has it that a big announcement will most likely hit at E3 with Sony unveiling the redesigned portable. An announcement of launch date (which should be sometime 4th quarter) is entirely possible as well. The redesigned product apparently does exist as this is what we've heard so far:

* The screen is gorgeous
* The loads are faster
* Improved buttons
* Internal flash — 8GB
* Possible touch-screen
* Possible built-in camera
* Uses UMD

The recent blockbuster success in Japan should prove that the PSP is anything but dead and deserving of a make-over. Stay tuned!

    Sounds great, but wasn't "uses UMD" a feature of the original? Come on, Sony.

    Meh. Kinda too late now. They missed their chance to compete with the DS. Winner - And still champion - of the hnadheld wars is Nintendo.

    A touch screen and a camera? So whoever has an old style PSP will be forced to upgrade to play newer games? Or will these features just not be used at all?

    I predict it will have two screens. One of these will be a touch screen.

    So this is going to compete with the DS by adding a probably useless camera and something that the DS already has?

    we'll see.
    if it does release it won't be any time soon, as stated. This source must be old however, last I heard, there wont be E3 anymore... have I been misinformed?

    Ive heard rumors of a camera for some time, and almost a admittion to it by Sony when they released new version of the PSP software with a Camera option in the photo menu. However what will be the practical use for it in a hand held. Other than a digital camera, Video VoIP has also been rumored but why? And more with the bandwidth the current PSP yields, what quality will we see? Perhaps it will be incorporated into the otherwise useless PSP connection to the PS3.

    At a glance its exciting, but in retrospect I think it will be a big disappointment, and wont have a market in America and Canada.

    Wouldn't the load times only be for nongames? A lot of people would be pissed if they had to buy a new PSP to reduce the load times.

    Next they'll be changing their name to "Sontendo". They might as well give Nintendo some credit for all the ideas they've taken. I really loved the PSX and PS2, but am feeling insulted by Sony's constant copying of Nintendo, especially considering how much they bash the ideas when Nintendo implements them.

    Of course, this is all speculation as far as the PSP touch-screen is concerned, but it wouldn't be the first time.

    EDIT: before I get flamed for being a fanboy, I want to mention that I'll probably buy a PS3 down the road, but it's getting to the point where I'd feel bad giving Sony any of my money.

    What if they're just going to add the touch screen stuff for a PDA like device. Ease of internet browsing and the such. Doesn't mean they're gonna start unloading mass amounts of touch screen games. I mean if it's only a redesign they can't make psp2 exclusive games can they? That's kind of lame.

    the internal flash will be a welcome boon for the psp, but $200+ is still more than most portable gamers or parents of gamers will ever want to spend for a handheld.

    Beyond the whole "Nintendo did it first" thing, adding a touch screen is a dicey proposition... it'll split the PSP market and further annoy disgruntled PSP owners (which isn't all of them by a long shot, but it's a fair number). And Sega never really recovered from their market split in the 32X/Sega CD/Saturn days.

    But I'm all for an improved hardware revision. Faster load times work for me.

    Can you please add "RUMOR" to the thread title? Because there's little that differentiates this from any of the other rumors from the past year and a half about a PSP redesign.

    If anything, we should credit this piece from Gamesindustry.biz:
    SCE UK managing director Ray Maguire has confirmed the platform holder’s intentions to release a redesigned version of its PlayStation Portable handheld.

    Speaking yesterday afternoon at the national launch of Sony’s PSP in Education initiative, Maguire told an invited audience of press, teachers and education specialists that the current PSP is just the "first iteration".

    In line with the firm’s strategy for previous consoles, a "smaller, lighter" system will be introduced in the future.

    Responding to a query on Sony’s plans for redesigning the system, Maguire added that any changes to the industrial design would not affect the size of PSP’s screen - widely seen as one of the system’s key strengths - which is "fixed". He did not offer any suggestions as to when the new iteration might be released.

    A reworked PSP has been rumoured for months, but this is the first time a Sony executive has gone on record to confirm the company’s plans. Aside from a reduction in size and weight, Maguire did not suggest any additional changes to the hardware.

    If the cost of components for the reworked PSP is less, the machine itself could also carry a lower price tag. It currently retails for GBP 179.

    Cutting the size and cost of console hardware has been standard practice for Sony since it introduced PSone in 2000, five-and-a-half years after the Japanese launch of the original PlayStation. The slimline PStwo launched four years after PlayStation 2.

    Following the PSP in Education event, a Sony spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz that while there are no "immediate changes" planned for the handheld other than new firmware updates, "In the longest term, of course we are always looking at ways to continue our platform development, and this normal business practice is what Ray was referring to."

    There's also no real time frame for release, so it could be next month or it could be next year. Of course, this would all have to surface about a month after I buy the old PSP. :P

    EDIT: Just reread the Kotaku piece, and they're rumoring an E3 announcement with a Q4 release. I could see the former fairly likely, but the latter? Not so much.

    I think it's in there to give the implication of backwards compatibility, which would be pretty key. If this thing does happen, I think a lot of people would buy it and then swoop down on all of the older PSP titles. That's what I've been doing, and I haven't paid more than $20-$30 for any of them.
