okay, so I've never seen any Dr. Who, but it sounds like I'd enjoy it

    where do I start?

I would say series 1 of the (relatively) "new" show. The one with Christopher Eccleston. it's in netflix streaming.

The older stuff really takes some appreciation and there isn't really anything you need to know from the older shows.

edit: though if you want to try out some of the older shows look for ones where the Doctor is played by Tom Baker

Huh, there's such a thing as a "Republican Marriage".

No, it's not what you're thinking.
Republican marriage (French: mariage républicain) was a form of execution that allegedly occurred in Nantes during the Reign of Terror in Revolutionary France and "involved tying a naked man and woman together and drowning them".

The french revolution was so fucked up.
We could afford to take a few cues from them.

Basically, start with the first of the new stuff. And ties to pre-'05 are pretty well explained in-show. Things are pretty cheesey until the last couple/three seasons, but no worse than, say Farscape or your average StarTrek:TNG episode. Go in expecting it to appeal to your inner child, then be pleasantly surprised when the show rises above that (which becomes very consistent as you go).

As for the older stuff, YMMV. I found anything before Eccleston to be worse than the original Trek by far, but a lot of people really love it. I'd give old Who a shot after the first season of 'New Who.'

Start with season 1 of the reboot, with Eccleston as the Doctor.

Start with season 5 of the new.

    Matt Smith is more fun.

Btw carrot, ep1 of season 1 is merely "ok". So dont give up on the show after just that one. Luckily, ep2 is one of the very good ones so you dont have to sit through any more waiting for it to "get good" if you dont like ep2.

house boarded up, water jugs filled, ac adapter prepped for power from car (temporary use, like microwave, or temporary PC usage via cellphone tether). Probably not going to have hurricane conditions, but it's gonna be shitty either way.

I enjoyed Tenant's entire run. I loved Donna. Series 4 had an incredible finale, and Tenant's exit in The End of Time made me cry.

Don't skip Eccleston and David Tenant.

Indeed. Eccleston is great. Tennant doesn't really get the hang of it until The Impossible Planet IMO

In terms of Doctor dying and regenerating episodes it's Caves of Androzani > The End of Time and then everything else trailing way, way way off in the distance

The Empty Child/ The Doctor Dances is easily one of the best Dr. Who stories ever, and that's Eccleston. Too bad he was apparently a dissatisfied prima donna on set.

I know it's cool to hate Tenant but the way he played the Doctor slowly unhinging. That glint in his eye really played up the line that the Doctor keeps himself bolted to, and the allure and seduction he feels to cross it.

If you skip Tenant you miss Blink and Gridlock, two of my favorite Doctor Who episodes of all time.

And strangely, both were in series 3 with Martha, the less popular companion.

It is not cool to hate Tenant. His run on Doctor Who is critically acclaimed and immensely popular.

It's hipster cool to hate him, which is different.

Biggest problem I had with Tenant's doctor was that he strangely circled around from "kill all the Daleks" and "sometimes you need to do shittastic things to save the universe" to "killing all the Daleks is genocide, regardless of the fact that they were going to kill everyone in the universe."

If Matt Smith wanted to leave and Tenant wanted to come back and they retconned the fuck out of the story to make the Doctor have the same body, I'd totally be there. I fucking love Tenant. Hell, some of the best acting in the Harry Potter movies is his 10 minutes of glory

  • DoctorArchDoctorArch Curmudgeon Registered User regular
That said, I did love Tenant very much, and I blame the above more on Russell Davies.

It's almost as if an ancient, time displaced entity whose entire race is literally trapped in temporal hell with the Daleks causes some sort of conflict within him

The thing is Tenant's run is overshadowed by Smith's. Not only by the stories but by Smith's superior performance.

LOL. Right. I enjoy the hell of out Smith. He is not Tenant. He's a different Doctor. Which is fine. But overshadow is just full of roflcopters

Because the Doctor is both afraid of the Daleks, hates the Daleks, and understands intellectually that genocide goes against all of his values.

Eccleston makes it clear in the first season that the Doctor is very much conflicted where the Daleks are concerned, and about the Time War in general.

He is damaged by his experiences.

Eccleston is still fighting a war
Tenant is a PTSD war survivor
    Matt Smith is recovering

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is spending $3.8 billion on a single subway station at the World Trade Center designed by Santiago Calatrava, a Spanish architect known for his costly projects. If New York could build subways at the prices that Paris and Tokyo pay, $3.8 billion would be enough to build the entire Second Avenue subway, from Harlem to the Financial District.

It's true that he was a different Doctor then Smith's. However, I'd consider Moffatt's far better than Davies on every level. This is coming from a huge fan of Davies' tenure.

    Tenant's Doctor didn't though,
    the Doctor/Donna did.

    Agree that Smith would have.
