Giles from Buffy Costume for Halloween

Last year I went as the Matt Smith Doctor, and this forum gave me crazy good advice for how to pull it off, and I ended up quite happy with it. I've just spent the last half-hour looking for Rupert ("Ripper") Giles costumes on the 'net, pretty much entirely unsuccessfully, so now I come here.

Here's what I currently am thinking: dark brown vest to go with sports/suit jacket (patches on elbows?), moderate tie, dark shoes. That is all pretty nondescript and ambiguous; what do I do to make sure this comes across as Giles? I am willing to put in some serious effort, though not necessarily serious money (though I have access to a /lot/ of thrift stores, and time is not a problem).

Carry a crossbow and put a giant bruise on your forehead. Giles got knocked out in almost every episode.

The vampyr book would make a good prop for the costume. It's the big flashy tome in the starting sequence.

You going with anyone you could partner up with, have em go as Willow or something? It'd be easy to phone in a recognizable Giles if you got another of the scooby gang with ya.

Also for props; glowing orb? Maybe a wireless nightlight stuffed in a glass ball?

Make sure to get the glasses and the hankie and constantly clean the glasses while talking to people.

No that was Giles, he did it every time Buffy or one of the Scooby's talked about sex.

I'd go with the librarian look, the professor jacket and tie that he wore most of the time. Get the glasses, and I agree about the vampyr book as a prop.

It's going to be hard to pull off without having someone go as willow or Buffy though.

go as the repo man from the genetic opera, but then take off your suit and reveal it was giles all along!

Are you going as Giles or as Ripper? Ripper (Young Giles) is more the UK Greaser, Giles is more Dr. Who.

If you want to go really meta and just further confuse the fuck out of everyone, you could go as Giles dressed up in his Halloween costume from "Fear, Itself":

But yeah, you'll either need a book prop or someone to dress up as Willow or Buffy in order for anyone to read your costume as Giles and not just "librarian"
