So I currently run a website that no one ever goes to. It's fairly boring, just a bunch of picture galleries of stuff i've done, etc etc. I'd like to convert it to more of a full fledged blog, with pictures, maybe an RSS feed down the side, all very customizable, but fairly easy to work with still. Leave comment ability for people to make notes, and so on.
However, I have no idea what kind of software I'd wanna use. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm proficient in HTML and know my way around a bit of PHP.
Try Wordpress. It has a lot of options, plugins, and skins that can make your site blogtastic while making it unique-ish... I run it on one of my sites and it works like a charm. Plus it's FREEEEEEEE!!!
If you are un-technical and looking for something to install on your own web hosting, Wordpress is your best bet. If you're up for a challenge, look into Movable Type, or better yet, TextPattern. If you're really looking for some software to sink your teeth into and fight your way through until you've chewed it into submission and can finally customize the hell out of it, Greymatter(original site here, newest version here).
If you're looking for a hosted option, you have hundreds of choices. You won't be able to host much non-text content without paying at least a small amount for more storage space though. MindSay is great if you're looking for a place with a community of other bloggers.

I like Blogger (run by Google). It's all very customizable. www.blogger.com
You can look at my blog if you like... it's half inane gaming stuff and half family stuff. I have no ads so I'm not making money off anyone that wants to see what an idiot I am or see my adorable son.
I'd probably go with Typepad otherwise. Wil Wheaton has his blog on it http://wilwheaton.typepad.com/wwdnbackup/ and if Wesley Crusher likes it... it can't be all bad.
I know you're looking for an extensible application to add to your site rather than a full publishing site, however, Vox is my new favorite toy.
I'm still very much in love with Blogger, but the more I fart around with Vox the more I like it. My only gripe is lack of custom CSS to change my layout, but I'm hoping that will come in time.
**Vox was created by the same folks that created MovableType, TypePad & LiveJournal, etc..

Is Vox one of those sign up things, or just software I can apply to MY site?
(my site is currently www.the56k.com, if you'd like to stare into the face of madness.)
I upgraded my blogger acount to a google one for Skeptobot.
And now I can't log in.
Thats awesome.
log in with your google account like it asks you to do on the comptar screen?
Dunna work Capt'n.
It's clearly my fault - but I haven't got round to solving it. I either gave the wrong email. Or typed the wrong password twice. I've just got so many different accounts littered around that I can't remember which account I changed the blog too. And so I'm not sure of the username to use when I request a new password.

Unfortunately, no, I don't think Vox has any sort of plug-in or distribution outside of RSS feed.
Like I said, I know you're looking for something to fit within your site and the previous suggestions of WordPad or MovableType are spot-on.
I'm merely throwing Vox into the overall "hey this is quality blogger software" hat.

just a note from my experience -- having used wordpress, textpattern, and movable type, installing wordpress was probably the easiest, especially since lots of domains automatically do it for you through their control panel nowadays. making your templates however was much easier for me with movable type and textpattern.
I run Wordpress on my site and it's hosted with GoDaddy. The site runs incredibly slow, but the previous one I setup using Greymatter is blazing fast in comparison. I'm thinking the GoDaddy SQL servers that Wordpress connects to are responsible for the sluggishness. Does anyone have similar experience with WP running incredibly slow or know where I can find better SQL servers?

Minor but important distinction. MoveableType and TypePad were created by SixApart. LiveJournal was created by Danga Interactive, owned by Brad Fitzpatrick, and created by himself and the LJ developer team. SixApart acquired Danga Interactive, and thus, LJ. Vox was created by SixApart after LJ's acquisition, and is a more grown-up version of LiveJournal.

SniperGuy: I can see from your WHOIS info that your web-hosting company is PowWeb. Your control panel should have a section called Install Central or Script Installs or something like that. You can automatically install Wordpress from there, so that would be the easiest solution for you. Their other offering, b2evolution, is probably more complex than what you need.

I just did this. It seems pretty cool. Anyone have suggestions for plug-ins or certain templates they like? I'm digging the built in CSS modifier.
Also, i've got it installed in the56k.com/blog, but I forgot how to route the56k.com to make the /blog the first shown folder. Probably really easy, but i'm a bit rusty.

edit: I like Wordpress, but making your custom theme is horribly annoying since the theme engine is pretty much plain PHP language.
