I don't know if because having a maxed out fighting skill leads to less melee weapon damage, but Marcus' monkey wrench lasted the longest of any weapon I've used. Pretty sure he was putting notches in it and named that bitch.
No, wrenches are beasts in this game for some reason. They're the most expensive weapon I have in my locker right now.
Are they better than crowbars? Thing's worth 90 influence. Or whatever that number means.
The wrench is 90 too. I think in my locker, the Wrench was rated 4 blocks (which may just be durability) but my crowbar was 3. The crowbar may have just been damaged but the wrench is the only thing I've seen with 4 full blocks.
I got sent to the farm to rescue someone; it occurred to me later it might make a good place after being sent to scout out some new homes by the same person I rescued. If you think about it, a wrench is essentially a solid chunk of iron or steel - it really would take ages to break if all you were hitting with it was bone and meat.
I don't know if there's any consequences to it, but lately I've been taking the obvious base camp choices (Church, House with the treehouse) as outposts because I have a different camp.
I just like "owning" all the best spots.

Can you do it outside of your fortified postion? I wonder how it handles them running back. I've noticed a few times during missions or story events I couldn't switch to anyone; then once it was complete it let me switch. Reading Gamefaqs forums, I'm sort of vaguely terrified to find what's happened when I go home and turn this back on. I didn't know the damn thing 'kept playing' and didn't really work to fortify heavily. I'm seeing dudes who spent some real time maxing here and there and came back to find they'd taken it in the metaphorical pooper overnight.

You can't do it during missions, and you may be able to do it when survivors are out... I did it accidentally once and it prompted me with "returning home" or something like that and then I was able to play as the person. I don't know where they actually were though so I can't say for sure.

You can switch to other people by using the journal and going over to another character that is friendly and pressing X (if you are not on a mission and they are not missing or on a mission). Your character basically teleports home (without any rucksack you may be carrying), and your switch to the new person at your home.
I also know the game gave me a button combination to drop a rucksack, but now I can't find it listed anywhere.
Unrelatedly: yes, you can call in different types of support using d-pad down (once you have them). It's also the menu for calling scavengers, setting up outposts and changing home base.
I have not found a good way of killing fatties yet. They break cars immediately, they can basically disembowel AI survivors (and possibly you) very easily and they take a huge beating from guns and melee weapons...even firebombs. Headshots sort of stun them a little bit, but not much else. I have not tried my mines or my grenades.
It's how my Immanuel died. He told his sob story about being the office Santa and fatty was all "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE". And the lifted him up and cracked him in half like some sort of human piñata.
I will be happy to see the infestation bug cleared up.

Re your spoiler:
During the mission where you have to fight one, it took 5 firebombs for it to die, and I don't even know if the firebombs killed it or it was sniped (unlikely since it was out of their firing range) but that's a lot of firebombs.
The pickup trucks are the only car that I've been able to kill them with and not completely destroy it in the process... but there wasn't much car left after.
My edged melee weapon broke almost instantly after I struck it. I haven't tried blunt or heavy weapons, which may be more effective (edged weapons usually being weak vs hard objects and such in most games).
I did notice that you can stun them, but I was in a car and I didn't want to get out to try and insta-kill it... if that's possible.
But the best strategy really seems to be to avoid them if you can...
I'm thinking about waiting for the game to be patched before I start playing again though, I probably won't but the fixes are pretty appealing.

Jorge was my office Santa. Fatties can't go through doors. Just take your time and shoot them in the head 2 or 3 times. Works for me.
So I went home for lunch and I didn't get screwed overnight, thankfully. Morale at 50% and lower on stuff - also, there were warnings that some stockpiles were over limit blah blah blah so I guess I lost all that stuff - motivation to trade I guess. I quickly established a food, two supply outposts and brought in some survivors. Pastor whatever has black fever, but my medicine hut needs some resource and when I click it on the map, the ? goes away to a new spot. I'll deal with it later.
I'm happy to report that running in a circle with Maya for ~15 minutes got her 2-3 stars of Cardio, and that was inside the perimeter of my fort.

that's a great strategy if you're not near a house that's not full of zeds. :P

Hmmm I don't think the house thing is technically correct. Or if I just encountered clipping, because my first fight with a fatty was in the very small confines of a house.
Very tough to get out of the way, and he tossed me around like a ragdoll. I managed to get the upper hand by dodging his charge, then he kinda stuns himself by hitting the wall (a la Bane) where I then beat his fucking skull in with my aluminum bat from behind.

You only had to shoot one 2 or 3 times in the head? With what gun out of curiosity? I know how to establish outposts but you can establish ones with resources? Do these resources deplete? How does one do this?
1) explore it completely, kill all zeds inside clear it out [scompletely (it is an "X" on the map)
2) press down to bring up the radio and request an outpost be made.
Certain buildings cannot be used as outposts (sheds are too small, for instance)
The number of outposts you can have is determined by your home too, I believe.

Was that directed for me ? I know how to establish outposts but it was mentioned that a food outpost was established. I was wondering what the difference between my outposts (symbol is a little castle with a flag on top) and a "food outpost" was.
I know how to establish outposts but you can establish ones with resources? Do these resources deplete? How does one do this?
Just don't take the resource supplies when you find them in the containers. Leave them in the cupbords/shelves/whatever, make the building an outpost and they will slowly supply your main base with them. Eventually, they'll run out and it's icon will become a castle.

Really? It wouldn't let me make the until the houses were entirely empty. I'll blow an outpost up and try it again later.

Outposts have to be explored (go in all the rooms), safe (kill all nearby zombies) and then searched (open all the shelves/fridges/etc) but you don't need to take the stuff from the containers. You can leave them in there.
Yea, I think you're right. That makes more sense too.
I know I explored it entirely, killed all the zombies, but I may have missed a container when I called and then after clearing it out was able to get the outpost up. The assumption on my part being that taking everything instead of opening everything being what let me do it.

Search but don't take; you'll get the little symbol for the resources on the house and then designate it as an outpost. In theory you could find a spot that has 3 food or 2 food and a gun or something I guess.
I killed the fatty with Maya's rifle which is a 7.62 badass I think. I went to a house and a few fattys come after you, but are unable to get inside. Normal zombies will however, so you beat them down / blast them and then dispatch the fat bastard from safety.

Actually, there's a special case for outposts established with Resources inside. If you nab, say, a place with Medical Resources, that outpost will give the base Medical Resources until whatever is at the outpost runs out. On the map, it will show that outpost with a big green icon of that resource type, and in the control tabs where it shows the layout of the base plus all the outposts it will show the resource type for each of the outposts.
So basically, setting up outposts at resource spots is a way to store Resources without hauling them back to base.
I have no idea if planting the outpost will also grab all non-Resource items inside a building, though.
Yeah, I considered taking the machete, crowbar etc but left it 'just in case'. Some of the reading I've done suggested that warehouses and such will always generate resources, which seems pretty unlikely but I've yet to test.

One warehouse I've come across definitely keeps regenerating resources, but it's a BIG warehouse. Dunno if there are other counterparts to that for the other resource types.
Oh, another thing I found out yesterday is that scavengers will ONLY come to a location if there are Resources to cart away. If you try to call in a scavenger just to clean a place out of items, the game won't let you.
Goddamn it, Marcus just got torn in half by a fatty. Kind of bullshit that every other type of zombie gives you two QTEs to avoid death except the one that is the most difficult to kill.

Important question: Did you get the achievement for dying when that happened?
“I used to draw, hard to admit that I used to draw...”
Nope, that came from my first survivor death, torn apart by a horde while defending the grange enclave while they were trying to build a guard tower. It was a random person, and the game saw fit to give him a sledgehammer when he had nowhere NEAR enough stamina to swing it effectively.
Then there was Ondrej, jumped and basically one shot by a feral up near the Wilkerson farm. That fucker came out of nowhere.
Ed wandered off and died sometime last night while my game was off (this shit is starting to get annoying; no this is NOT an MMO, it's a fucking single player game and I should not be fucking penalized for turning the damn thing off!)
Marcus makes four, and the only one I really cared about.

I do have one of my survivors wielding a frying pan. She will probably die because I think it's too amusing to change to her and give her a real weapon.

I am really not pleased that your followers can die while the game isn't even turned on. Who thought this was a good mechanic? It effectively punishes people who can't play all day, in a very real and direct way.
I love the variety of weapons in this game. So many different types to choose from, but I usually just take a Glock, pain killer, stamina boost, heavy duty melee, a distraction device and molotovs when I know I'm headed for trouble. For clearing out houses I like to toss fire at the clumps of zeds, pick off the specials through the windows and clean up when there are just a few left. Seems to be working well. Also, throwing molotovs seems to bump your Shooting skill.

I think it depends on the state of the game when you leave it (supplies in particular). Part of the reason why so many people are having problems though (and it is supposed to be patched), is that the game tracks the infestations existing on the map instead of just what's near your base to determine how horrible they are without the mighty Player assuming direct control to get things done?
But IDK for sure. It could very well be entirely random, but that issue with infestations complicates things.

To find the farm, leave town to the west and take the first left, then the next right. Fair number of hordes when I went, take a new vehicle.
I've switched via the menu several times. Is there a restriction to that feature?
Maybe? I thought you had to go talk to them and then say "Take over for a while, I'm beat."
Just yesterday I switched via the menu. I think you just highlight the portrait of the character you want to play and press X to switch.
Camera cuts over to the person you just switched to. It's pretty cool.
