I recently moved into college and shipped my custom built desktop via UPS. When I got it, several cables had been unplugged from my motherboard including the big power cable that is latched in place and the RAM sticks were loose. I believe somebody went inside my computer and did something, but I'm not sure. Either way, I can't get a signal on my monitor now and every time I turn my computer on, it comes on for a couple of seconds and then shuts off by itself for a couple of seconds then comes back on and stays on. I have put everything back in place and have had several people come check it, but I still can't get a signal. The red Ram error light has come on my motherboard and I have tried pressing the reset button on my motherboard which makes it run some tests on the ram and it reboots a few times on its own but it still isn't working. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice for how to fix this problem? I have it insured with UPS so its covered, but I'm just trying to see if there is a fix to this problem that I'm just not seeing while I wait for this to go through their claims service.
First things first. reseat the ram(sounds like you did that, do it again), take the video card out and plug power into just the motherboard and hard drive. If your gaming PC is like mine and doesn't have video out on the motherboard you wont be able to check to see whats going on. Good news is that you might be able to get the thing to post so listen for the beeps if that happens. If it posts then you can check the interwebs for what the series of beeps mean, probably your ram is bad. A quick way is to just put in some known good ram and see if it boots.
I would call up that UPS insurance thing too, always good to get compensated for their obvious intrusions into your shit. Those cables dont just come lose, ye know?
All in all I bet you could get the thing running with some new sticks of ram, but dont just take my word for it. Get those bastards to pay you the insurance money if you can and start testing the parts to see what works. This will require duplicate parts and such so either a really nice friend who will let you test stuff in his rig or a desktop repair place that you pay for a diagnostic service. When you say loose do you mean they were unseated and the end clamps were undone? or the whole slot is loose?
Did I mention call up those terribad shipping providers you had the foresight to get insurance from?
