I use my phone as a way to text my girlfriend throughout the day as a distraction from work.

I don't need an MP3 player because I have one, don't need a camera because I have one, don't need any games because I have a DS.. The only fancy feature on my current phone is MP3 ringtones so I can have the Metalocalpyse theme screaming "DETHKLOK DETHKLOK DETHKLOK" over and over when someone rings me..

I've never paid more than £50 for one and they all seem to last 3+ years. Yet the people that get contracts / buy expensive ones off ebay all seem to replace them within about 6 months..

    Woo oldness.

i had a nokia 1100 which is an old style nokia with an ultra low res monochrome lcd screen and couldnt really do more than make calls and send messages even though it could only fit like 3 words on screen at a time with the low low resolution

then i swapped with a friend and got his pretty crappy sonyericsson that didnt really offer anything extra except a crappy colour screen, kinda crap reception, and flipping it open and shut
and i wanted a flip phone

then my mothers phone wasnt working properly so she bought a new one, but then repaired her old one and gave me the new one
so i got a good sony-e flip phone. i only use for calls and text, and have mp3 tones

but it is pretty satisfying to be talking to someone and slam the phone shut to hang up on them rather than this finding and pressing a tiny button crap
like that seinfeld standup about cordless phones

I'd like a phone which doubles as a decent MP3 player. But such a thing doesn't seem to exist. I mean 4 gigs is the largest I can find in terms of storage.

My dad got me one of them Sprint PPC-6700 thingers for christmas. You know, the one that's as big as a cement brick and does more than my computer. It has a keyboard, but I can't send texts or IMs because we don't have the plan for them. I actually found it a really ironic present, because I've always been a big advocate of phones just being phones, not to mention the fact that I only answer my phone one out of every ten or so calls to begin with. I'm going to see if I can trade it in for something simpler.

Edit: Oh, and the cops have it right now. Can't forget that detail.

the main thing i like about my phone is being able to fuck the carrier over by hacking mp3s as custom ringtones along with cropping my own animated gifs for the backgrounds. i have a clip from the sabatoge video right now it is amazing

New phones are just giant feature whores. That draws me to them, but then if I get one, I rarely use its features. I never use a ringer, or listen to MP3's. But I do use some functions.

My newest phone is the Motorola Q. Its a "Smartphone", it does all the PDA type functions but its very slim (half the thickness of my Samsung A920). http://www.itechnews.net/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/motoQ_6.jpg

Basically, I waited for a deal and in the end made $80 by getting it.

If you want something to piss people off, this would be it. It even has a flash for the camera that you can use as a flashlight, which is obnoxiously bright. It lights up a room without a problem.

I think you could win a movie theater cell phone war with that, someone opens there phone, you blind them with yours.

Do they have a BES server and Exchange/Domino for mail?

If not, you'll find the blackberry a pain. The webmail way of using the email is clunky at best, but once you have it integrate with exchange it works extremely well. I'm looking forward to my personal cell contract being up in July so I can cancel it and swtich to just a blackberry for everything (also hoping to get a new 8800 when they release up here if I can get my boss to let me switch to Rogers instead of shitty Bell/Telus)

We have a BES and Exchange (INCREDIBLY Large company, most everyone has our products in their home.) Almost everyone has a blackberry, except the "grunts" and contract workers like me. I'm the only one in my department without one.

And I do like those 8800s, but we'll never see them at work here (can't have cameras of any type).

    I heart my Moto Q.

    moto_q.jpg

I had a Treo 700w for 6+ months, and although decent enough, the clunky brick-like demeanor of the thing got old. When they released the Q, I was and have remained in Smartphone nirvana.

    - 1.3mp camera\video
    - Windows Mobile w\Outlook & OneNote <3
    - miniSD slot (I rotate a couple 2GB cards for music\video when I travel)
    - Bluetooth (bonus Awesome for allowing me to tether the Q to my laptop for wi-fi access in a crunch wherever i get cell signal)

My only complaint about the phone is the battery life. The standard slim battery lasts *maybe* 7-9 hours, depending on my talk-time, etc. The fat-kid battery has much better life, but at the cost of making the Q considerably more bulky.

Thinking of swapping out my existing Q for either a Blackjack or a newer model Q (now in black yay!), but so far, I've been totally pleased with the Q.

I tried a Moto Q for a bit as a possible blackberry replacement (new exchange service pack lets you do push mail).

With the amount of mail I get I couldn't stand it. It doesn't have a central spot for all your folders (like how the blackberry puts all mail into 1 folder, then you can view folder by folder if you choose) and I also found it way too slow to navigate around.

Hm. Maybe I'm not understanding what you're describing, but my Q has a central "Messaging" center, which I've added to my Home screen layout.

    The messaging center:

    A. Text Messages
    B. Outlook E-mail
    C. Hotmail
    D. MMS
    E. GMail

It took a couple tries to figure out (agreed, some navigation just sucks on the Q, but it's a minor issue for me), but I set up my Exchange\Outlook info, ran a FULL sync, and upon completion, went into Manage Folders to disable\enable only the items\folders that I wanted to keep sync'd.

So, once in Mobile Outlook, it looks like this:

    Deleted items
    Drafts
    Inbox
    - <folder>
    - <folder>
    - <folder>
    Outbox
    Sent Items

Keep in mind I get probably 400-1000 emails a day between MOM alerts, system outtage notices and daily work correspondence, so no way in hell I want all that constantly sync'ing with my phone. I trimmed some rules and cleaned up my folders on the Exchange side, and then went back to the Q and set the sync options to run only within the last 1 day, new messages = instant.

Works the exact same way for my POP3 accounts - set up, run a full sync, go back and configure my folders\options to pull down what I want, when I want it.

I also get a pile of mail every day. I have a large number of folders and rules set up to keep it organized in outlook. In the BES I pick which folders to redirect to my blackberry, but out of those I want to view them all in 1 location on the device (without having to go through multiple folders to see them).

I could probably deal with the extra navigation, but I found the Q to be far too slow compared to the blackberry I'm used to.

The one think I liked about it though, was being able to add multiple accounts to it. I have to use a separate gmail client on the blackberry.
