Quick question regarding fans

This may be a stupid question, but -

Are fans meant to pull air into the PC, or blow it out ?

I recently took the fan off my PC for cleaning, the one attached to the side panel of the PC, and now can't remember if it's meant to pull cool air in, or push hot air out.

Thoughts ?

And yes - I forgot the cardinal rule of noting where everything goes before stripping anything down for maintinance...

a side fan would push air into a case.

    the general rule is:
    front/side/bottom are intake fans
    back/top are exhaust.

you also probably wouldn't of been able to put the fan on backwards, as the blades would rub against the side panel.

    That's good to know, thanks.
